Hertha BSC through after extra time
A last gasp winner from Sami Allagui saw Hertha BSC win 3-2 in Neumünster.
Neumünster - Hertha BSC had their work cut out in a season-opening 2013/14 DFB Cup round one tie on Sunday. It took a goal from Sami Allagui in the very last minute of extra time to see the newly-promoted Bundesliga visitors through to round 2 against a plucky VfR Neumünster side.
Berlin coach Jos Luhukay was without the services of key duo Pierre-Michel Lasogga (ankle) and Ronny (bruising). Marcel Ndjeng got the nod ahead of Peter Pekarik at right back. New signings Sebastian Langkamp and Johannes van den Bergh lined up alongside John Anthony Brooks to complete the back four. Defensive midfield comprised of new skipper Fabian Lustenberger and Peer Kluge, while up front Alexander Baumjohann, Änis Ben-Hatira and Sami Allagui supported sole striker Adrian Ramos.
Hertha wearing their red and black striped away kit took the early initiative, as Baumjohann crossed into the box from the by line, but Ramos headed well over (1.). The home side took the lead with their first chance of the game, as Michel Harrer fired a low shot from the edge of the Berlin box through the wall. Hertha stopper Thomas Kraft saw the ball late and was unable to prevent it from crossing the line to give the minnows an early lead (5.). Hertha furiously went in search of an equaliser. On 16 minutes Sami Allagui battled his way down the right from where he drew and rounded home keeper Marcus Hesse before setting up Änis Ben-Hatira alone in the middle for a simple tap in.
Hertha continued to press forward but without much success at first. After half an hour Allagui found his compatriot Ben-Hatira with a defence-splitting through ball. The move ended in the latter finishing well with a low shot into the net at the far post (30.). The home side battled hard and won a series of corners. From one of them Christian Rave forced a decent save from Kraft. Hertha led 2-1 at the break.
Equaliser but a man down
Both teams emerged for the second half unchanged. The home side had the opening chance of the new half as Baumjohann was forced to clear the ball off his own goal line following a corner (48.). Moments later Ben-Hatira floated a ball from midfield into the Neumünster box, but Allagui narrowly failed to reach the ball at the far post (50.). An effort from distance by Ali Moslehe failed to trouble Kraft between the Berlin posts (52.). The Berlin keeper was however powerless seven minutes later as Christopher Kramer headed the home side level, after Ndjeng had made a poor clearance (59.). Luhukay reacted by introducing fresh legs up front, replacing Ramos with young goal-getter Sandro Wagner.
The home side continued to attack last season's Bundesliga 2 champions, rarely allowing them a glimpse of goal. Hertha won a free kick near the by line, but Langkamp headed over an accurate cross from Baumjohann (76.). Four minutes later Luhukay brought on Hany Mukhtar for Baumjohann up front. Then Kluge pulled a shot wide after being nicely found by Allagui (81.). Wagner had a great chance with a header, but the ball was blocked at the last minute (87.). Kramer was then shown a second yellow card for a second bookable offence, so the home side went into extra time a man down (89.).
Allagui saves Hertha's bacon with the last kick of extra time
As extra time began the Berliners once again took the initiative, as Mukhtar sent Allagui on his way into the Neumünster box, from where the Tunisian international could only strike a post with his shot (94.). Ndjeng let fly from 13 metres out only to be denied by a fine save by home keeper Hesse (102.). Hajime Hosogai replaced Kluge for the remaining minutes. Hesse produced another stunning save to fish an Allagui effort out of the top right hand corner of his goal (116.). Hertha finally got their just reward as Lasse Thomas fouled Ben-Hatira inside the Neumünster box. Match referee Benjamin Cortus immediately pointed to the spot. The ensuing spot kick was put away by Allagui to see the visitors win 3-2 and advance into the second round.
The capital city side are in action again next Saturday (10.08.13, 15.30 CET), as they open their 2013/14 Bundesliga campaign with a home game against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympic stadium in Berlin.
