Hertha BSC draw 2-2 in Nürnberg
Hertha BSC draw 2-2 in Nürnberg

Hertha turned things around but conceded a last minute equaliser.
Berlin - Hertha played 1. FC Nürnberg in their first away game of the new season on Sunday afternoon (18.08.13). The action packed game ended 2-2, watched by Hertha legend Erich 'Ete' Beer, who visited the team at the team hotel the evening before the game. Hertha led 2-1 until the 89th minute, then Nürnberg equalised through their Japanese international Kiyotake.
Hertha coach Jos Luhukay was forced to make changes to the team which hammered Eintracht Frankfurt 6-1 at the Olympic stadium in Berlin last time out. Injured defensive duo Johannes van den Bergh and Marcel Ndjeng were replaced by Peter Pekarik and Fabian Holland. After making his USA senior debut, fellow defender John Anthony Brooks was on the bench at first. His place went to Christoph Janker, who lined up alongside Sebastian Langkamp at centre back. The positions in front of that pair were occupied by the same players from last weekend. Nürnberg made two changes to the side which drew 2-2 at Hoffenheim on Bundesliga matchday 1, with Berkay Dabanli replacing Per Nilsson at the back, while Josip Drmic played in midfield instead of für Timo Gebhart.
Nürnberg take the lead on 40 minutes
After even opening minutes the visitors took the early initiative. Ramos cut into towards the Nürnberg box after being found by a fine pass from Baumjohann, only to be brutally stopped by a challenge by Dabanli who was booked for his troubles. The following free kick flew narrowly wide of the near post (9.). The home side began to venture forward themselves soon afterwards but Hertha's defence looked tight. On 19 minutes Ramos crossed from the right and Ben-Hatira volleyed the ball well wide of the far post. Nürnberg had a good chance following a free kick taken by Hiroshi Kiyotake. Daniel Ginczek headed the ball against the right hand post so Hertha could breathe easily again (21.).
Robert Mak then tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his effort posed no problems for Berlin stopper Thomas Kraft (31.). Two minutes later at the other end, Sami Allagui played the ball into the box from the right wing, but Feulner somehow toe poked the ball off the boot of Ben-Hatira who looked likely to score (33.). Hertha counter attacked and Baumjohann crossed into the middle from the right to Ben-Hatira. Luckily for the home side keeper Schäfer narrowed the angle and made a good save to prevent the Tunisian striker from breaking the deadlock (36.). Nürnberg finally opened the scoring on 40 minutes as Ginczek found Josip Drmic inside Hertha's box, from where he finished well with a volley. Nürnberg led 1-0 at the break.
Hertha turn things around but concede late equaliser
Both teams emerged for the second half unchanged. Ben-Hatira curled a free kick into the Nürnberg box but found no takers (47.). Then he put a pinpoint cross onto the head of unmarked Ramos, who failed to get any direction onto his header (49.). Javier Pinola needed a last ditch challenge to thwart Hertha following good approach work involving Allagui and Fabian Lustenberger (54.). Hertha's efforts were finally rewarded on 61 minutes, albeit with a little help from the home side. Allagui cut in from the right and shot towards goal. His effort was deflected past Schäfer by Dabanli to make the score 1-1. Moments later Hertha almost struck again, but Baumjohann was denied a goal by the right boot of Schäfer.
Jos Luhukay introduced fresh legs in the form of Sandro Wagner and Ronny, who replaced Allagui and Janker. Moments after coming on the Brazilian tried his luck from 20 metres, but the shot failed to trouble Schäfer (75.). Four minutes later Hertha's number 12 went one better from the penalty spot after Pinola had felled Baumjohann inside the Nürnberg box. Ronny's spot kick saw his side lead for the first time in the game. Baumjohann was replaced by Brooks late on. In the final minute of the game Kiyotake equalised for the home side from a direct free kick.
