Hertha lost 0-1 in Augsburg on Bundesliga matchday 6.
Augsburg - A contoversial penalty was the difference between the two sides on Sunday afternoon (28.09.14), as Hertha lost 0-1 at FC Augsburg on Bundesliga matchday 6. Berlin coach Jos Luhukay stuck with the team which had beaten Wolfsburg in Berlin in midweek. Augsburg played with the same team which lost 0-1 away to Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 5, with the expection of Nikola Djurdjic who began for Sascha Mölders, who missed out through injury.
Both teams tried to get forward at every opportunity during the opening stages of the game, played in front of 28,532 inside the SGL Arena. Ronny let fly on 2 minutes, but the ball only found its way into the grateful arms of home keeper Marwin Hitz (2.). At the other end Augsburg created their first chance on 8 minutes as Hertha lost possession going forward. Luckily for the capital city visitors a timely challenge by Peter Pekarik took the ball off Raul Bobadilla just before he was about to pull the trigger. The best chance during that period in the game fell to Hertha summer signing Salomon Kalou, who latched onto a fine diagonal ball and force a superb save from Hitz (11.). The game became riddled with niggly fouls which naturally interrupted the flow of the game.
Spot kick breaks the deadlock
Although the home side had more of the ball, Hertha looked more dangerous when they won the second ball and mounted counter attacks. On 21 minutes Kalou found Haraguchi with a sweet through ball, but the Nippon midfield man could only blaze the ball well over the bar. Augsburg then opened the scoring under slightly controversial circumstances, as Bobadilla won a soft penalty against Berlin keeper Thomas Kraft. The ensuing spot kick was tucked away well by Paul Verhaegh to put the home side ahead (26.). Hertha struggled to threaten in front of goal as has been the case so often this season. The home side had two half chances through Bobadilla (28.) and a long distance effort by Dominik Kohr. Neither effort troubled Kraft and the hosts had a one-goal lead at halftime.
No changes were made during the break, and Hertha began their search of an equaliser, but failing to find a hole in the home back line. Augsburg's defence looked solid and Hertha seemed void of ideas on how to breach it. Midway through the second half Augsburg's Djurdjic (64.) and Hertha's Beerens (65.), got shots away, both of which were easily dealt with by the respective keepers. Luhukay then brought on Julian Schieber and Valentin Stocker for Haraguchi and Heitinga.
No penetration late on
Salomon Kalou was found on the left edge of the home box, but Baba was on hand to prevent the Ivory Coast striker from getting a shot away (74.). Augsburg mounted occasional counter attacks and on one one occasion, Pekarik had to be quick to prevent Werner from threatening the Berlin goal (78.). Hertha then brought on Änis Ben-Hatira hoping to breath in some new life up front. A late corner taken by Ronny was headed towards his own goal by Philp. Hitz however was on hand to grab the ball at the second attempt. In injury time at the end of the second half Stocker and Ndjeng both had shots blocked.
Moments before the end of the four minutes of injury time added on at the end, Ronny failed to produce with a corner and free kick. The game ended in a 0-1 defeat for Hertha, who now have until Friday night (03.10.14, 8.00 pm) to prepare for the matchday 7 visit of struggling VfB Stuttgart to the Olympic stadium in Berlin.
