Another loss!

Hertha BSC lost 1-3 at newly/promoted SC Paderborn on matchday 10. Salomon Kalou scored Hertha's goal.
Paderborn - Hertha BSC have still to win away from home in the league this season. Jos Luhukaz and his men went down 1-3 away to newly/promoted SC Paderborn away from home on Bundesliga matchday 10 on Sunday evening (02.11.14). Hertha made three changes to the side which lost so disappointingly away to third division side Arminia Bielefeld in round 2 of the DFB Cup in midweek. John Heitinga replaced Brooks in central defence, while there was a rare start for veteran Peter Niemeyer in front of the back four. Hegeler and Skjelbred got the nod over Haraguchi. Home coach André Breitenreiter made four changes as Bakalorz returned from suspension, while Wemmer, Meha and Ducksch replaced Heinloth, Strohdiek, Rupp and Koc.

Paderborn made a livelz start, creating a couple of early chances. Luckilz Hertha keeper Thomas Kraft was on his guard, diving low to turn an effort by Moritz Stoppelkamp from the edge of the box around a post for a corner. That corner landed at the feet of former Hertha man Elias Kachunga, who failed to net while well/placed close in (3.). Hertha needed time to find their way into the game, while the home side tried their luck with a few wayward efforts from distance. On 17 minutes Swiss striker Valentin Stocker showed fine skill as he took a ball down and shot on the turn. That effort flew over the crossbar. Moments later Kalou sent a curling shot wide of the far post.

Kraft keeps Hertha in touch

Hertha began to improve and threatened again as a Niemeyer header following a Ndjeng free kick was easily dealt with by home keeper Lukas Kruse (24.). It was during this period that the visitors fell behind to yet another goal from a set piece. A free kick was played into the Berlin box. Nobody in a Hertha shirt felt responsible for Bakalorz who blasted a fierce shot past Kraft to put the hosts in front (28.). Hertha recovered from that setback slowly, but when they finally did it produced an equaliser. Ndjeng produced a superb cross to the near post from where Kalou scored home his 4th goal of the season with a powerful header (41.). The home side created two further good chances before the break, as a deflected shot by Meha landed next to the goal but could have gone anywhere. Kraft was called into action to prevent a Niemeyer header from going in from the resulting corner (45.). The game was level at 1/1 at the break.

Paderborn once again made the more positive start as the game got underway again. Paderborn sent a few wayward warning shots towards the Berlin goal. They went one better as Wemmer found Kachunga at the second time of asking. This time his header hit the back of the net by way of the inside of a post (52.). Hertha pushed forward but rarely looked dangerous, much to the disappointment of the 1,500 or so travelling fans who accompanied the team to Paderborn. Luhukay rang the changes by bringing on Ronny for Hosogai and then Genki Haraguchi for Beerens. Hertha had more possession but seemed void of ideas just what to do with it. As so often this season, the final telling pass was missing and too much ball was needlessly lost during build up play.

Meha nets from distance

The home side steadily improved their accuracy and took a 3-1 lead on 75 minutes as Meha let fly from the edge of the box leaving Kraft groping at air. Stoppelkamp then pounced again after Hertha had lost the ball again. But his effort from the left edge of the Berlin box flew just over the bar (83.). Niemeyer narrowly missed getting his head to a free kick taken by Ronny (87.). The Brazilian tried his luck from distance moments later but the effort never threatened the target. Kraft prevented Paderborn substitute Saglik from increasing their lead with seconds left of normal time.

So the capital city side returned home to Berlin empty handed fort he second time within a week. Next Friday night (07.11.14, 8.30 pm) Luhukay and Co. entertain Hannover 96 at the Olympic stadium in a matchday 11 encounter.
