Cup revenge in Bielefeld!

Hertha BSC enjoyed DFB Cup revenge away to Bielefeld. Kalou and Darida scored for the capital city side.
Bielefeld - Hertha BSC have reached round 2 of the 2015/16 DFB Cup. On Monday night (1008.15), the side under head coach Pál Dárdai won 2-0 away to newly-promoted second division side Arminia Bielefeld - the team who knocked them out in round 2 last season.

Hertha began the game at the tradition-steeped Alm stadium with the same side which faced Genua in their last friendly of the recently ended pre-season, with Fabian Lustenberger and Sebastian Langkamp in central defence, while Jens Hegeler and Vladimir Darida lined up in attacking midfield. Valentin Stocker and Roy Beerens were on the wings and the sole striker was Salomon Kalou. Youngsters Florian Kohls and Maximilian Mittelstädt made the first team squad for the first time.

As expected, the home side began keeping things tight at the back, allowing Hertha to run matters in midfield. Stocker had a shot blocked on eight minutes before Hegler missed a better chance within 60 seconds of it (9.). Beerens also had an effort blocked following a corner on 20 minutes. Bielefeld sat back hoping to hit the visitors on the break but Lustenberger against Klos (24.) and a fine save with his left boot by Berlin keeper Thomas Kraft against former Hertha man Christian Müller maintained Hertha's clean sheet (28.). There were no goals during the opening half.

Hertha looked much more determined as they emerged for the second half. Stocker missed a good close range chance to break the deadlock on 48 minutes. Moments later Arminia keeper Hesl saved a header by Langkamp (49.). Hertha were closer the breaking the deadlock than the home side but just couldn't find a way through at first. Kalou arrived too late for a nice pass by Hegeler (59.). The home side then created chances of their own, but Schütz (65.) and Hemlein (68.) found out that Berlin stopper Kraft was in miserly mood. Dardai brought on Schulz and the new man was instrumental in finally breaking the deadlock, seeting up Kalou for the opening goal on 73 minutes, before Darida put the game beyond Bielefeld with a second goal for the viisitors two minutes from the end. Kalou had missed a gilt-edged chance six minutes earlier.

Hertha produced a tight defensive display and an improved overall performance after the break so deserved to reach round 2. Now Dardai and Co. focus on the opening game of the new Bundesliga season away to FC Augsburg on Saturday (15.05.15, 3.30 pm).
