Ten-man Hertha lose at Schalke

Hertha BSC fought hard, but lost 1-2 away to Schalke on Bundesliga matchday 9.
Gelsenkirchen - Hertha BSC had to battle for sixty two minutes a man down after Ibisivic was sent off at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday afternoon (17.10.15). Salomon Kalou deservedly equalised for the visitors but a heart breaking injury time goal from Meyer deep into injury time at the end of the second half saw them leave Schalke empty handed.

Central defender Sebastian Langkamp returned to full fitness during the international break and replaced injured fellow defender Niklas Stark in coach Pal Dardai's starting line -up. The Hungarian once again opted for a 4-4-2 system with Kalou and Vedad Ibisevic leading the line. After losing 0-3 at home to Cologne on matchday 8, Schalke boss Andre Breitenreiter decided on three changes to his team, with former Fulham defender Sascha Riether replacing Junior Caicara, World Cup winning Schalke captain Benedikt Höwedes made his first start of the season at the expense of Roman Neustädter. Up front Eric Chupo-Moting began the game for prolific Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who took his place on the bench at first.
Disaster on 18 minutes

Hertha in their all red strip made a cautious begin to the game, sitting back to see what the home side had to offer. Schalke created the first chances of the game through free kicks by Di Santo (10.) and Geis (14., 19.). neither though managed to beat Berlin stopper Jarstein. The opening exchanges were fought hard with tackles flying in from all angles. After booking Hertha's Genki Haraguchi (16.) and Schalke's Di Santo (17.), the referee reached for his back pocket to send Hertha's ibisevic off for an awful sliding challenge inside the Hertha half on Meyer (18.). Höwedes celebrated his return to action by nodding home a corner taken by Geis to break the deadlock on 28 minutes. Ten-man Hertha to their credit did not let their heads drop but continued to get forward at every opportunity. Schalke seemed happy to protect their slender lead which they took with them into the half time break.

Dardai brought on Alexander Baumjohann at the start of the second half. Tolga Cigerci remained in the changing rooms. Moments into the second half, Schalke threatened through Sané (47.) and Goretzka (48.). Once again though Berlin keeper Jarstein did well to deny both men. Despite being a man down, the Berliners still managed to reach the Schalke box. Mostly, it didn't look like the home side had a man advantage. Schalke mainly threatened from set pieces, with Chupo-Moting and Höwedes going close (64.). Then Berlin summer signing Mitchell Weiser struck a post which almost stunned the huge crowd into silence on 67 minutes. Then Kalou deservedly equalised for Hertha as he headed home a Wieser cross to give the huge contingent of travelling Hertha supporters a glimmer of hope. After that the Berliners missed a further chance through skipper Fabian Lustenberger (83.), while Meyer missed a sitter at the other end (88.). Meyer however was not done and finally beat Jarstein with an effort deep into injury time to make the final score 2-1 to a very lucky Schalke side.

Ingolstadt up next

Hertha BSC fought their hearts out and didn't show that they were a man down for so long. They matched Schalke in all departments and deservedly equalised through Kalou. But the last gasp winner deep into injury time broke the stubborn Berlin resistance and hearts. Matchday 10 sees Hertha travel south to face Ingolstadt away from home on Saturday evening (24.10.15, 6.30 PM).
