Hard-earned victory

A strong defensive display helped Hertha BSC win 1-0 in Ingolstadt.
Ingolstadt - Mitchell Weiser’s first goal of the season saw the visitors through against a tough tackling home side on Bundesliga match day 10.
After losing away to Schalke last time out, Hertha coach Pál Dárdai made two changes to his starting line-up. Suspended midfielder Vedad Ibisevic and Tolga Cigerci were replaced by Valentin Stocker and Alexander Baumjohann, who made his first start in 546 days after serious injury Baumjohann played the play maker role, while Stocker lined up in left midfield.
Last weekend Ingolstadt lost 0-1 at VfB Stuttgart. Their coach Ralph Hasenhüttel made just a solitary change to his team from that day, with Christiansen replacing injured team mate Lex. The home side had a two-pronged attack consisting of Leckie and Hinterseer.

Ingolstadt took the game to Hertha early on but failed to create much danger. Hertha on the other hand scored from their first chance of the game through summer signing Mitchell Weiser who netted after home defender Suttner nodded a Kalou cross to the feet of Weiser who pulled the trigger right away to fire his side in front. Once again the Berliners were often missing the final pass to round off promising moves. Both teams tried to get forward but decent goalmouth action was a rarity. Ingolstadt won a series of free kicks but found no way through the well organised defence with captain Fabian Lustenberger at the heart of it. Former Hertha man Morales (18., 44.) failed to convert any of his brace of first half chances.
The second half also began with the home side trying to take the game to the visitors. Groß (49.), Suttner (56., 63.), Leckie (58.), Bregerie (60.) and Pekhart (70.) all missed the target or were denied by some impressive goalkeeping from Berlin stopper Rune Almenning Jarstein. Lustenberger and Langkamp worked well at the back and allowed the home side almost nothing in the way of chances. Dardai then shored up his defence by introducing Hegeler for Baumjohann and van den Bergh for Stocker. Those changes breathed new life into the visitors. Hegeler could have doubled Hertha’s lead but missed a gaping open goal on 78 minutes. In the end Ingolstadt had no less than four strikers in their team but the Berlin defence stood firm to record a crucial and welcome win.
A tight defence and in-form keeper Jarstein saw Hertha keep a clean sheet in Ingolstadt. Up front Mitchell Weiser opened his scoring account with what turned out to be an 11th minute winner. Hertha take on FSV Frankfurt in the DFB Cup away from home on Tuesday evening (27.10.15. 7.00 PM). Their next Bundesliga game is on Saturday (31.10.15), as they face rejuvenated Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Olympic stadium in the capital city.
