Round 3!
Round 3!

Hertha BSC reached round 3 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday night by beating FSV Frankfurt 2-1 after extra time.
Frankfurt - Hertha BSC edged a thrilling cup battle 2-1 on Tuesday night (27.10.15). They had to work hard to breach the massed defence of visitors FSV Frankfurt. Golley put the visitors ahead but the capital city side fought back to win thanks to a brace of goals from Ivorian hitman Kalou to reach round 3 of the DFB Cup.
As previously announced Berlin boss Pál Dárdai rang the changes to the team which triumphed in Ingolstadt on Bundesliga matchday 10. Vedad Ibisevic, who is suspended in the Bundesliga started the game as did Jens Hegeler. Baumjohann and Stocker reverted to the bench. FSV coach Tomas Oral also made a couple of changes to his side which beat Bochum 3-2 in division 2 last time out, with Golley and Oumari picked in defence ahead of Huber and Gugganig.

Both teams made a bright start and indicated early on that they wanted to take the game to each other. The visitors bravely got forward, but the home defence nipped any possible danger in the bud. The opening chances fell to Hertha as Kalou fired over from 11 metres out, while Haraguchi fired wide four minutes later. Moments earlier Ibisevic looked to have been fouled inside the FSV box but match referee Ittrich waved play on. Although they seemed intent on defending first, Frankfurt did venture over the halfway line at times. Hertha headed clear two corners taken by Kruska. The home side missed further decent chances by Ibisevic and Haraguchi (29.,34.). Frankfurt’s only chance in the opening half came on the stroke of half time as Haji Safi fired just wide of the far post. The first half ended 0-0.
Dárdai brought on Tolga Cigerci for Hegeler at the start of the second half. The visitors emerged in attacking mood. Home keeper Jarstein was forced into action to tip a long range lob over his crossbar. Moments later though Frankfurt broke the deadlock through Golley (47.). Hertha had more of the ball and threw everything forward as they searched for an equaliser. On 56 minutes a corner from the left taken by Plattenhardt was helped into the path of Kalou by Weiser. The Ivorian made no mistake as he nodded Hertha level from close range. Hertha seized the initiative and continued to press forward, but Cigerci (63.) and Haraguchi (65.) squandered further chances. The game was nicely poised at 1-1 after ninety minutes so extra time had to be played.
Hertha began extra time brightly but once again missed chances through Haraguchi and Ibisevic (91., 93.). Then Perdedaj felled Kalou inside the area and the referee rightly pointed to the penalty spot. Up stepped Kalou to coolly slot the ball home to complete his brace. Frankfurt however were far from finished and Jarstein easily dealt with an effort from FSV substitute Kapllani (105.). The visitors took the game to Hertha at the start of the second half of extra time, but Pires (106.) and Awoniyi (116.) failed to beat Jarstein. Moments from the end Plattenhardt fouled Pires and was sent off for a second bookable offence. Frankfurt failed to capitalise from the resulting free kick so the game ended 2-1 to Hertha.
Hertha were made to work hard by defensively minded division 2 opposition who never gave up fighting. A brace of goals by Kalou saw the Berliners into the third round of the DFB Cup and a step closer to their annual dream of playing in a final at their own stadium. Dardai and Co. are in action again on Saturday (31.10.15), as in-form Borussia Mönchengladbach visit the Olympic stadium in Berlin on Bundesliga matchday 11. The DFB Cup third round ties will be played on December 15 +16.
