3-1! Kalou hat trick in Hannover

Hertha BSC beat Hannover 96 away thanks to a hat trick by Ivorian hit man Kalou.
Hannover - Three goals by Salomon Kalou saw Hertha BSC take three crucial points away to Hannover 96 in the opening game of Bundesliga matchday 12 on Friday night (06.11.15). The home side’s goal came by way of a Kiyotake penalty.
Hertha boss Pál Dárdai rang the changes following his side’s 1-4 hammering at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach last time out: Yanni Regäsel made his first start for the capital city club at right back. Mitchell Weiser reverted to defensive midfield. John Anthony Brooks returned in a central defensive role, while captain Fabian Lustenberger operated in front of the back four alongside Per Skjelbred. Valentin Stocker and Tolga Cigerci were on the bench. Kalou was lone striker despite the head injury which saw him wear bandaging. The home side only made one change after beating HSV away last time out, with Bech replacing Schmiedebach. Kiyotake recovered in time to play and coach Michael Frontzeck played Sobiech on his own up front.

Hertha began to dominate things early on, having most of the possession. Both defences looked solid and both teams cancelled themselves out in midfield so goalmouth action was a rarity at first. Hertha built useful moves down the right through Regäsel and Weiser. Darida (19.) and Haraguchi following a Plattenhardt corner (20.) had the first chances to break the deadlock but failed to do so. The home side played cautiously, hoping to hit the visitors on the break. The Berlin defence was in miserly mood though and managed to nip most Hannover danger in the bud. The deadlock was deservedly broken on 33 minutes as Kalou netted after being nicely set up by Haraguchi. The home side went in search of an equaliser but failed to get past Lustenberger and Co. Kiyotake missed the home side’s only real first half chance on the strike of half time (44.).
The crowd of 40,200 saw the home side emerge for the second half in a more offensive mood, while Hertha sat back at first to deal with any early onslaught. Kiyotake (54.) and Bech (56.) tried their luck with long distance efforts. On 60 minutes Hertha struck again as Kalou completed his brace after rounding home keeper before sliding the ball home. Ten minutes later Plattenhardt fouled Hannover’s Bech and the home side were awarded a penalty by match referee Dinger. Kiyotake stepped up to score from the spot and give the home fans hope. Hannover threw everything forward but found no way past Berlin stopper Rune Jarstein. Four minutes from the end Marcelo Weiser conceded a penalty which Kalou took to complete his hat trick and hand Hertha a deserved 3-1 win.
