Hertha beat Leverkusen 2-1!

Hertha BSC beat Champions League participants Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at the Olympic stadium on matchday 15.
Berlin - Hertha BSC recorded an excellent win on Saturday afternoon (05.12.15). The capital city side beat 10-man Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 on Bundesliga matchday 15. It was the Berliner’s 400th Bundesliga win. Hertha scored through Vladimir Darida (7.) and John Anthony Brooks (60.). Hernandez (29.) equalised for the visitors after Boenisch was sent off for a brutal challenge after only 17 minutes.

Home coach Pal Dardai rang the changes following his side’s 0-2 defeat away to champions Bayern Munich last time out. Mitchell Weiser returned to the right wing from injury. Sebastian Langkamp missed out through suspension so captain Fabian Lustenberger took his place in the back four. Up front Dardai opted for a two pronged attack involving Salomon Kalou and Vedad Ibisevic. Bayer Leverkusen coach made just one change to the team which drew 1-1 against Schalke on matchday 14, with Julian Brandt replacing Hakan Calhanoglu on the left wing.
Hertha began the game the brighter of the two teams and created the opening chance as Weiser failed to convert a good pass from Genki Haraguchi. Vladimir Darida went one better only four minutes later as he slid the ball home following good approach work involving Ibisevic. The home side kept up the pressure and further chances were missed by (10.) and Weiser (26.). There was drama on 17 minutes as Leverkusen’s  Sebastian Boenisch was shown a straight red card followingan awful challenge on Yanni Regäsel. That set back woke up the visitors who equalised with their first chance in the game through Chicharito (26.). Understandably the visitors took a more defensive approach, hoping to hit Hertha on the break. A Tah header then struck the crossbar on 31 minutes. Hertha could have taken the lead again on the stroke of half time but Kalou’s fierce shot from a tight angle only hit the side netting.

The second half was quiet for the opening 15 minutes. John Anthony Brooks powered Hertha ahead with a superb header following a corner (60.). It was Hertha’s first goal from a corner this season. The home side kept up the pressure and Kalou (67.) and Brooks (82.) missed further scoring opportunities. Leverkusen to their credit carried on fighting and looked useful going down the right using Bellarabi. Home keeper Rune Jarstein and a tight defence thwarted their final chances (73., 79.).

Hertha are on their travels on matchday 16 as they travel to lock horns with newly-promoted Darmstadt next Saturday (12.12.15, 3.30 PM).
