DFB Cup: Dream goes on!

A 2-0 victory away to Nürnberg on Wednesday night saw Hertha BSC progress to the quarter finals of the DFB Cup!
Nuremberg - Goals from Vladimir Darida (32.) and John Anthony Brooks (65.) on Wednesday night (16.12.15), saw Hertha progress to the quarter finals of the DFB Cup in front of 35,204 inside the Grundig-Stadion in Nürnberg.
Following the superb recent 4-0 Bundesliga win over Darmstadt, Hertha boss Pál Dárdai made two changes to the side that triumphed on that day. Suspended defender Marvin Plattenhardt was replaced at left back by Johannes van den Bergh. Genki Haraguchi made the starting line-up, while Mitchell Weiser got the nod over Yanni Regäsel in defence. After beating SC Freiburg 2-1 last time out, Nürnberg made four changes, with Hovland replacing Margreitter at the back, and Petrak, Möhwald and Blum replacing Erras, Leibold and Füllkrug respectively.

The visitors took the early initiative, combining at pace and showing everyone present that they had made the long trip south with victory on their minds. They needed patience though against a tight home defence who decided to sit back and try to hit the Berliners on the break. The opening chance of the game fell to Berlin’s Salomon Kalou, who forced a save from home keeper Schäfer after being nicely played in by team mate Per Skjelbred (15.). The keeper only secured the ball at the second attempt. Hertha went one better on 32 minutes as Darida netted following nice approach work involving Haraguchi and Ibisevic. The visitors lead 1-0 at half time
Nürnberg emerged for the second half trying to prevent Hertha from settling on the ball. But the visitors soon got on top, creating some decent scoring chances. After home keeper Schäfer saved a Weiser effort on 64 minutes, the visitors doubled their lead as Brooks nodded the ball home from the resulting corner (65.). Nürnberg threw everything they had at Hertha, whose keeper Rune Jarstein underlined recent top form by denying Nürnberg’s Burgstaller (77.), Brecko (80.) and Bulthuis (88.) with a string of superb reflex saves. The visitors played out the remaining time without any problems to reach the quarter final stages of the DFB Cup with of course the major carrot being dangled in front of them – the chance to play in a final at their own stadium.
The final Bundesliga game of 2015 sees the capital city club host Mainz at the Olympic stadium in Berlin on Sunday afternoon (20.12.15, 3.30 PM).
