3-3: Shared spoils in Bremen

3-3: Shared spoils in Bremen

Hertha BSC drew 3-3 away to Werder Bremen, in front of 40.000 at the Weser-Stadium on Bundesliga matchday 19 on Saturday afternoon.
Berlin - On Saturday afternoon (30.01.16) Hertha clawed a draw from the jaws of victory as they drew 3-3 away to Werder Bremen in an incredible game played at the Weser-Stadion in Bremen.

Hertha coach Pál Dárdai kept faith with the side which drew 0-0 at home to FC Augsburg in the first game of 2016. Man-mountain defender John Anthony Brooks passed a late fitness test to make the team. Werder boss Viktor Skripnik made just one change to his side which beat Schalke 3-1 away from home last time out, with the injured Bargfrede being replaced by Junuzovic.
Hertha began well, taking early of the game with nice combination football. It was the visitors who also created the opening chance, as Fabian Lustenberger found Vedad Ibisevic, who had a shot blocked by Djilobodji in the nick of time (5.). On 13 minutes veteran Peruvian Pizarro set the ball up for Grillitsch. It took a timely challenge by Mitchell Weiser to defuse the situation, moments after Berlin keeper Rune Jarstein had taken the sting out of a fierce effort by Grillitsch. Hertha threatened again on 27 minutes. This time a corner taken by Marvin Plattenhardt was head3ed onto the back of Werder skipper Fritz. The visitors opened the scoring only 60 seconds later, and how! Per Skjelbred won the ball following a Bremen throw in before feeding Vladimir Darida, who unleashed a 25 metre thunderbolt to send the huge contingent of Hertha faithful into raptures. Berlin kept up the pressure and the home stopper Wiedwald was called into action to thwart a crisp effort by Kalou. Haraguchi crossed the ball in and it struck the crossbar! Dardai’s men kept attacking and were rewarded again on 41 minutes as Plattenhardt scored a beauty from a direct free kick. Seconds before the break Jarstein superbly kept out a well struck free kick by Djilobodji.

Hertha remained in control at the start of the second half. Werder pulled a goal back on 67 minutes through Bartels who nicely rounded off a fine counter attack. Hertha restored their two goal lead however just four minutes later after substitute Johannes van den Bergh did well to find Kalou, who made no mistake, scoring his ninth of the season (71.). Bremen to their credit did not give up. They won a penalty after Ujah was brought down inside the Berlin box. Up stepped Pizarro to strike the ball past Jarstein who had chosen the right corner but couldn’t keep it out (75.) Hertha’s misery worsened as a corner by Junuzovic was headed home by Garcia to draw the home side level on 77 minutes. Neither side had the strength to force a winner and the game ended 3-3.

Despite leading 2-0 and then 3-1, Hertha allowed Werder back into the game too easily. They now have a chance to recuperate the points dropped in Bermen next Saturday (06.02.16, 3.30 PM), as they welcome Borussia Dortmund to the Olympic stadium in Berlin on matchday 20.
