2-0: Hertha beat Schalke!

Hertha BSC beat Schalke 2-0 in Berlin on Bundesliga matchday 26.
Berlin - On Friday evening (11.03.16) Hertha BSC deservedly beat Bundesliga table neighbours Schalke 2-0 at the Olympic stadium in the capital city. The men on target for the Berliners were Vedad Ibisevic and Niklas Stark. Hertha BSC remain in thirda place in the Bundesliga table, four points ahead of Schalke.

Hertha coach Pál Dárdai decided on two changes to his starting line-up following the 0-2 defeat in Hamburg last time out. Peter Pekarik and Fabian Lustenberger were replaced by Genki Haraguchi and Tolga Cigerci. Schalke boss André Breitenreiter kept faith in the side which won at Cologne on matchday 25.
Hertha made a strong start, creating the opening chance of the game on 9 minutes as Salomon Kalou broke down the left where he left several opponents in his wake. He then found Vladimir Darida whose effort really tested Schalke keeper Fährmann. The capital city side took the game to the visitors who at first kept things tight at the back, waiting for a chance to hit the Berliners on the break. Schalke’s first offensive move came on 21 minutes as a cross by Caicara found Dutch danger man Huntelaar, whose header was easily dealt with by home stopper Rune Almenning Jarstein. Six minutes later Dardai’s men created their next scoring chance. Genki Haraguchi was fouled and Tolga Cigerci curled the resulting free kick from the left edge of the box agonisingly wide of target. Hertha continued to combine well until they reached the Gelsenkirchen box where the final telling pass was missing. Cigerci got a volley away from the edge of the box but Fährmann was on hand to avert the danger (37.). Five minutes later though the Schalke keeper was picking the ball out of his net after Vedad Ibisevic fed Darida after winning the ball in midfield. He in turn fed Kalou who played a sweet ball into the path of Haraguchi who then passed to Ibisevic supporting the attack. He left Fährmann no chance as he coolly finished to give the home side a deserved 1-1 half time lead (42.).

Hertha continued to get forward as often as possible after the break, but it was Scahlke who created the opening chance of the new half. Belhanda played a through ball to Aogo who failed to find the target. On 58 minutes Berlin broke down the left with a move which ended in Kalou being stopped by a timely challenge from Neustädter. Seven minutes later the home side struck again, as Niklas Stark perfectly headed home a Darida corner taken from the right. Cigerchi then had a chance to increase the lead but firsed his shot agonisingly wide of goal (71.). Herthe continued to create chances and Ibisevic fired wide after being nicely played in by Haraguchi. The ball was in the Schalke net on 79 minutes again only for Darida to be rightly given offside. Man-mountain USA defender John Anthony Brooks was also caught offside as he netted (88.). Hertha played out the remaining moments of the game to grab a superb and well deserved 2-0 win.

The Berliners were worthy of their win through a strong team performance. The score line could have been higher had they converted more of the multitude of chances created. The capital city club remain in third place in the Bundesliga table after Bundesliga matchday 25. Next Saturday afternoon (19.03.16, 3.30 PM) Hertha welcome FC Ingolstadt to the Olympic stadium on matchday 26.
