Hertha had to find their feet early on as the home side took the game to them combining well going forward. That went well until the 14th minutes. Dahoud latched onto a poor pass by Berlin keeper Rune Almenning Jarstein, immediately feeding Hazard who easily opened the scoring for the hosts. Hertha kept their cool, winning a handful of set pieces and threatening with a deflected shot from Vladimir Darida, following a corner from the right taken by Vedad Ibisevic. Gladbach stopper Sommer was on hand to avert any danger (26.). Hertha stuck to their guns as they went in search of an equaliser. Darida fired a shot from the right edge of the box over the crossbar (35.). Jarstein was in action again seven minutes later as Gladbach as Gladback attacked again using Stindl and Hazard . The shot from an acute angle by Hazard – brother of Chelsea superstar Edin was well kept out by the keeper (4.2). The half time whistle was blown soon afterwards.
The second half began with both teams evenly matched. Hertha seemed to have more presence that was the case before the break, only for Gladbach to up tzhe pressure and double their lead on 55 minutes. A low ball by Wendt from the left found Johnson who in turn fed Hahn, who left Jarstein no chance as he calmly slooted the ball home to make it 2-0 to Borussia. Hertha’s Norwegian keeper then produced a top drawer save to deny Johnson. The visitors tried hard but were once again missing the final telling pass to their front men. Borussia's tight defence were in miserly mood too usually nipping any possible danger in the bud. The capital city side threatened again on 69 minutes as home stopper Sommer did well to keep an effort from Jens Hegeler out. It was game over for the Berliners seven minutes later. A counter attack involving Johnson, Herrmann and Hazard. Jarstein saved the shot by the Belgian, but was powerless to stop Herrmann who put away the rebound (76.). Things got even worse for the visitors. Hazard was found by Dahoud, held two defenders at bay before scoring with a massively deflected shot to make it 4-0 (80.). Gladbach were not finished though and netted again through substitute Traore who beat Jarstein from an acute angle after being played in by Stindl (85.) That completed the rout of Hertha at the packed Borussia Park.
Gladbach were well worth their victory although probably a goal or two too high on the balance of play. Hertha’s next chance to recuperate the points lost there comes on Friday night as Dardai and co. entertain bottom placed strugglers Hannover 96 at the Olympic stadium in Berlin on matchday 29. That game on April 8th kicks off at 8.30 PM.
