Bayern coach Pep Guardiola made seven changes to the team which beat Werder Bremen 2-0 in the other DFB Cup semi-final. Only Neuer, Alaba, Vidal and Lewandowski remained in the team where they were joined by Rafinha, Tasci, Benatia, Kimmich, Vidal, Thiago and Douglas Costa.
Hertha began bravely against the current table-toppers, creating a couple of early half chances. Home keeper Thomas Kraft was first in action on 8 minutes as he punched away an effort by Douglas Costa who let fly from a central position. Bayern began to up the pressure and Hertha bravely matched them at first. Hertha had their first decent chance after 20 minutes as Mitchell Weiser got the ball from a throw in. Benatia however prevented him from getting a proper shot away with a timely block. Two minutes later Kraft got the better of Vidal in a one on one situation (22.). Berlin continued to take on the Champions League semi-finalists in a courageous manner and kept the game goalless until the half time break. The home side deservedly left the pitch to thunderous applause from the massive crowd.
The collective good times feeling was rudely interrupted as Götze cut into the left side of the Hertha box from where he found Vidal, whose deflected close range shot opened the scoring the scoring for the visitors who never looked back from then on (48.). The home side to their credit recovered well from the setback but Bayern began to make more of the ball when they had it. The Bavarians put the game to bed through an incredible piece on individual magic, as Douglas Costa cut in from the left and as he got some five metres from the left edge of the Hertha box he unleashed a left footed thunderbolt which flew into the top left hand corner of the net (79.). There was then a magical moment for young Florian Kohls who was brought on for Cigerci for his Bundesliga debut (83). Bayern easily played out the remaining minutes of what was a workmanlike and well deserved victory. Should they win again next weekend the will be crowned Bundesliga champions for the fourth season running.
Hertha produced a spirited display and could have even opened the scoring in the first half. Dardai’s men stuck to their task and were only properly beaten by that Costa genius striker. The capital city side remain in fourth place in the table, with a healthy nine point cushion ahead of the sides who will not quality for the Europa League next season. Dardai and Co. cross the famous Rhein river on Saturday, for an eagerly-awaited top four clash against Bayer Leverksen at the sold out BayArena in Leverkusen (30.04.16, 3.30 PM).
