Hertha BSC win penalty shoot out in Regensburg to reach round 2 of DFB Cup.
Regensburg - Hertha were involved in a typical cup fight on Sunday evening. The capital city side needed to win a penalty shoot out to reach round 2. On Sunday evening (21.08.16), head coach Pal Dardai’s men came from a goal behind to equalise through Mitchell Weiser to force a penalty shoot out which the Berliners won 6-4, after the game had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Dárdai opted for two men in front of the back four (Per Skjelbred and Vladimir Darida), with Valentin Stocker playing behind the front line. The home side who have not lost any of their five division 3 league games so far had former Hertha man Marvin Knoll at the heart of their defence.
As expected the home side began cautiously, getting as many men behind the ball as possible and Hertha struggled to break them down. Regensburg still managed to threaten first though, and it took a fine timely challenge by Peter Pekarik to avert the danger (23.). Shortly afterwards Hertha keeper Rune Almenning Jarstein came out on top in a one on one situation (26.). Then Jarstein’s counterpart Philipp Pentke produced an excellent save to deny Marvin Plattenhardt (33.). Hertha continued to create chances but Stocker failed to head the ball home following a corner and a pinpoint cross by Darida (37.). Stocker had another chance following good work by Haraguchi, only to be denied by Pentke (43.). The game was goalless at halftime.

Niklas Stark replaced already-booked central defender Brooks at the start of the second half and the new half was only seconds old as no less than three Berlin men  failed to connect with a Plattenhardt ball close in (46.). The deadlock was finally broken at the other end as Jarstein tipped a Kopp effort away for a corner. That corner was converted by Alexander Nandzik (51.). The pressure was now on the Bundesliga visitors who threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Regensburger defenders threw themselves into the path of efforts by Stocker and Darida. Eine Stocker-Flanke geriet nach toller, schneller Kombination für Ibisevic zu hoch (70.). Intricate combination play involving Ibisevic ended in a Stocker cross being too high for him to make the most of (70.). Six minutes later the ball was in the back of the home net but it didn’t count because Stocker was ruled offside. Dardai brought on Weiser for Haraguchi and the substitute dragged Hertha level as he headed home a corner taken by Darida (83.). Finally! Dardai had a chance to put the game to bed four minutes later but could only hit keeper Pentke with his effort. Another Hertha substitute Julian Schieber who came on for Stocker was played in by ibisevic only to be thwarted by the home keeper (90.). The game ended at 1-1 after 90 minutes so extra time was required to find the eventual winners.

Schieber nodded the first chance of extra time narrowly wide of target on 92 minutes. Moments later Regensburg’s Geipls followed suit with a shot from distance (93.). Schieber (after a cross by Skjelbred) (101.) and Ibisevic (after being set up by Pekarik also missed half chances (105.). The visitors continued to get forward in the second half of extra time but the home side threw caution to the wind too. Hertha’s defence held firm and when they allowed Regensburg a sniff of a chance Jarstein was on hand to avert the danger . Ibisevic then narrowly failed to connect with the ball during a well worked counter attack (117.). There were no further goals scored so a penalty shoot out ensued during which Jarstein became the Berlin hero. After Ibisevic, Darida, Weiser and Plattenhardt had converted their spot kicks for Hertha as did Regensburg’s Thommy and Dzalto and, the Norwegian stopper kept out the penalty taken by Hein. Kalou then scored for Hertha to send them through to the second round.

Although they created good scoring chances, apart from Weiser’s equaliser the visitors failed to hit the target again. Jarstein made a crucial save at the perfect time to ensure the capital city club fight to live another day. The draw for the second round will be made on Friday (26.08.16) by Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff live on TV.
