Rollercoaster ride in Frankfurt

Hertha BSC drew 3-3 away to Eintracht Frankfurt on Bundesliga matchday 5.
Frankfurt - A crowd of 45,000 inside the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt certainly got their moneys worth on Saturday afternoon, as Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC drew 3-3 on matchday 3. The visitors opened the scoring but were behind at the break before turning things around again. Frankfurt scored a late equaliser to make the final score 3.3. Hertha’s goals came from Vedad Ibisevic (19., 58.) and substitute Alexander Esswein (64.). Frankfurt’s scorers were Fabian (39.),Meier (45.) and Hector.

After losing 0-3 at Bayern Munich during the week, Berlin boss Pál Dárdai decided to make two changes to that team. Per Skjelbred returned alongside Fabian Lustenberger in defensive midfield, with Allan Souza reverting to the bench. Valentin Stocker replaced Alexander Esswein in attacking midfield. Former Hertha man and Frankfurt head coach Niko Kovac made just one change to his side which won 2-0 in Ingolstadt last time out, with Blum replacing Rebic on the left wing. Alongside him were Fabian and Seferovic, with danger man Meier up top.
Both sides made a positive start and Hertha’s opening half chance came as Haraguchi crossed towards Stocker who was running into the box. Sadly he narrowly missed connecting with the ball (3.). Not long afterwards Hertha keeper Rune Almenning Jarstein denied Blum, clearing the ball away for a corner which came to nothing. Stocker got the ball on the edge of the home box. Moving into the box he was felled by Seferovic and Hertha won a penalty. The spot kick was strongly dispatched into the bottom right hand corner of the net by skipper Ibisevic to give the visitors the lead (19.). Frankfurt went on all out attack as they searched for an equaliser, but Hertha were clever in defence, not allowing Eintracht much in the way of chances. The home side caught Hertha on the break after a Hertha corner. Superb work by Blum ended in him finding Fabian who equalised from only seven metres out (39.). That goal boosted the home side and their fans. Eintracht won a corner which was taken by Fabian whose effort rebounded to the feet of Meier 2 only metres out who couldn’t miss – and didn’t (45.). Frankfurt led 2-1 at the break.

Alexander Esswein replaced Pekarik at the break taking his place on the right wing, while Weiser moved behind him into the right back position. The ploy paid off too! Stocker fed Esswein who played a pinpoint low ball into the box and the feet of Ibisevic who struck a sweet volley into the back of the net to make it 2-2 (58.). Six minutes later Esswein scored a dream goal to put the visitors ahead again. The summer signing left Frankfurt substitute Rebic in his wake before drilling a wonderful shot into the top left hand corner of the net from the edge of the box. What a strike (64.). Frankfurt fought hard but struggled to break down Hertha’s solid defence. Schieber came on and could have extended the lead on 87 minutes but failed to do so. Instead the home side struck to equalise through a Hector header in injury time at the end of the game. The dramatic game ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Hertha and Frankfurt gave the crowd wonderful entertainment in what was a turbulent game to say the least. After taking the lead and falling behind before the break, they never gave up and came back in the second half to turn things around. Hertha then missed a chance to put the game to bed, allowing the home side to equalise in injury time. On Saturday (01.10.16, 3.30 PM), Hertha welcome struggling HSV at the Olympic stadium in Berlin for a matchday 6 clash.
