2-0! Hertha beat St. Pauli in the DFB Cup!

Hertha BSC won 2-0 away to second division side FC St. Pauli in a DFB Cup round 2 clash in front of a 29,000 capacity crowd at the legendary Millerntor stadium in Hamburg. Goals by Weiser and Stocker did the business for the visitors.
Hamburg - Hertha were in action once again on Tuesday night (25.10.16). The capital city side triumphed 2-0 over St.Pauli to reach round 3. Although the home side fought hard, the visitors were worth their win in the end. Goals at the perfect time by first Mitchell Weiser (42.) and then Valentin Stocker (54.) saw the Berliners home. Both goals came during periods of Hamburg pressure.
After beating Cologne 2-1 at home in the Bundesliga at the weekend, Hertha head coach Pal Dardai opted to make two changes to the side he fielded on that day. Peter Pekarik and Valentin Stocker replaced Genki Haraguchi and Alexander Esswein, allowing Mitchell Weiser to move a place further up the pitch and onto the right wing. St. Pauli made five changes to their team which lost 0-3 at Sandhausen last time out: Kalla, Sobiech, Rosin, Dudziak and Duksch were dropped and replaced by Miyaichi, Buballa, Koglin, Litka and Choi.

The game began as a lively pace before the visitors began to assume control. Neither side threatened each others goals early on. The first chance of the game fell to Hertha as Ibisevic got his head to a cross by Kalou, only to be denied by Pauli keeper Himmelmann (13.). Three minutes later Ibisevic was beaten to the ball by Himmelmann before the former was ready to nod the ball home. Mitchell Weiser tried his luck from distance, but his effort flew well over the crossbar (23.). The home side reached Hertha’s goal for the first time on 29 minutes. Berlin stopper Rune Almenning Jarstein cleared his lines in the nick of time as Litka threatened. Hertha then took the lead in the middle of a period of Pauli pressure. Kalou had a shot blocked but Weiser was on hand to open the scoring from the rebound (42.).
The start of the second half was just as lively as the first but with more goalmouth action. Pauli’s Hornschuh headed his side’s best chance over the bar on 49 minutes. Moments later the visitors had a double chance to score. Firstly Kalou struck a post with a shot, before Himmelmann held onto a header by Ibisevic (50.). The home side upped the pressure and Hertha struck again! On 54 minutes Weiser broke down the right, left Buballa in his wake before finding Stocker lurking at the far post from where he nodded home the easiest of goals. Pauli threatened late on as Duksch (78.) and then Picaults both hit the bar. Hertha easily played out the remaining minutes before celebrating with their travelling fans under the floodlights in Hamburg.
The victory sees Hertha progress to round three of the DFB Cup. The draw for round 3 will be made live on German TV on Wednesday evening (26.10.16). The players report back for training on Wednesday as they begin to prepare for Sunday’s Bundesliga matchday 9 trip to TSG Hoffenheim (30.10.16).
