0-0: Hertha squander victory in Augsburg

Missed chances cost Hertha BSC dear on Saturday afternoon (19.11.16), as they could only draw 0-0 in Augsburg In front of 27,007 inside the WWK-Arena on Bundesliga matchday 11.
Augsburg - Hertha collected a valuable away point as they drew 0-0 away to FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. After a scrappy opening half, the visitors were the better side after the break and had easily the better chances as they put the home side under pressure. The Berliners squandered a string of decent scoring opportunities as Augsburg clung on for a point.

After the superb 3-0 home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at home last time out, Berlin boss Pál Dárdai once again rang the changes as he welcomed back fit again duo Marvin Plattenhardt and Sebastian Langkamp to the back four, while Niklas Stark reverted to defensive midfield. Valentin Stocker returned from suspension and he and former Augsburg man Alexander Esswein began the match. Maximilian Mittelstädt, Fabian Lustenberger, Genki Haraguchi and injured Mitchell Weiser all missed out.
Augsburg won 2-0 in Ingolstadt on matchday 10, but coach Dirk Schuster still felt the need to replace Koo with Halil Altintop in central midfield. Former Hertha defender Christoph Janker was at the heart of the home defence, while another former Hertha star Gojko Kacar was on the bench at first.

Hertha made the better start in what was a scrappy affair early on. Esswein looked useful as he created pressure down the right. The visitors had the better early chances too. Salomon Kalou found Esswein and it took a fingertip save by home keeper Hitz to keep from Hertha opening the scoring (8.). The right winger then dragged a Plattenhardt cross wide of target (13.). Neither side found it easy creating attacks after that early action as the game flattened out with both defences looking solid. The best Augsburg chance was missed by Hinteregger who was denied by the right boot of Hertha stopper Jarstein in a one on one situation.

The second half began brightly with Hertha taking the early initiative to move forward. Dardai’s men created the opening chance of the new half as Vedad Ibisevic had a promising header blocked (50.). Augsburg then missed a couple of half chances through Stafylidis (58.) and Baier (61.). Dardai then introduced fresh legs by bringing on Julian Schieber and Genki Haraguchi. That breathed new life into the visitors who then created another decent chance as Schieber fed Valentin Stocker whose shot on the turn was turned away by Hitz (68.). Stocked was then denied by Hitz again, this time he managed to hold onto a header by the Hertha striker (78.). Niklas Stark fired agonisingly wide of goal (82.) The game ended goalless.

The 0-0 result was Hertha’s third league draw of the season. They are currently in 4th place on 21 points. Hertha’s next game is at home against Mainz on Sunday afternoon (27.11.16, 3.30 PM).
