Hertha BSC lost 0-1 to Werder Bremen at the Olympic stadium in Berlin on Saturday afternoon (10.12.16).
Berlin - Hertha BSC lost 0-1 at home to strugglers Werder Bremen at the Olympic stadium in the capital city on Saturday afternoon (10.12.16). Kruse scored the crucial winning goal for the visitors.

Pál Dárdai made four changes to the team which won 3-2 at VFL Wolfsburg last time out. Captain Vedad Ibisevic returned from suspension while fit again duo Vladimir Darida and Per Skjelbred replaced Julian Schieber, Valentin Stocker and John Anthony Brooks in the starting line-up. Alexander Esswein got the nod over Japanese international Genki Haraguchi. Dárdai’s Bremen counterpart Alexander Nouri made just the one change following the 2-1 home win over Ingolstadt on matchday 13, with Fritz replacing Junuzovic.
The home side created the opening chance of the game inside the first minute as returning skipper Ibisevic narrowly missed the target following a good ball into him from Alexander Esswein. Although the home side looked to be slightly on top, the visiting defence was in miserly mood and kept the home side at bay while waiting for a chance to hit Hertha on the break. Hertha managed to nip any danger on the counter attack by Bremen in the bud at first so the game began to be played out between both areas. The biggest chance of the opening half came on 35 minutes – for the visitors, as home keeper Jarstein did well to parry an effort by much-travelled Bremen hit man Pizarro. Kruse blasted the rebound over the bar as it looked easier to score. Two minutes late the Norwegian stopper did well to deny Bartels (37.). Bremen stuck to their task and were rewarded on 41 minutes as a mistake by Hertha’s Stark saw Bremen’s Kruse advancing on Jarstein in a one on one situation which was won by the former, putting the visitors ahead. They kept that lead until the break.

Hertha tried hard after the break but had to be wary of dangerous Bremen counter attacks. The home side struggled against Werder who understandable defended their crucial lead by defending in numbers. Hertha threatened again on 65 minutes as former Berlin keeper Jaro Drobny between the Bremen posts did well to tip an effort by Kalou from distance over his crossbar. Drobny was called into action again three minutes later. This time the Czech-born keeper had to deal with a shot by Ibisevic who had been nicely set up by Kalou on the edge of the Bremen box. On 70 minutes it was the turn of Jastein to shine again, superbly dealing with a Garcia header from point blank range. The Berliners tried to build up a period of constant pressure, while tzhe visitors waited for a chance to counter attack. It was Hertha though who used that tactic to threaten next as substitute Mitchell Weiser left several opponents in his wake as he advanced on goal from where he set up Valentin Stocker who looked on in horror as Drobny turned his crisp effort around a post (77.) That Drobny! Hertha had a further good chance to equalise four minutes shy of full time as Srocker played a Weiser cross to Ibisevic who could only nod the ball agonisingly wide of target. As hard as Hertha tried the ball just wouldn’t hit the back of the net. Werder clung onto their lead and took three crucial points in their battle against relegation. For Hertha it was the first time that they had lost points at home.

The 0-1 defeat marked the first time Hertha had dropped points at home this season. The capital city side remain in third place in the Bundesliga table. Next up is a tough away trip to high flying controversial club RB Leipzig next Saturday (17.12.16, 3.30 PM).
