The home side produced some early pressure to thest the visiting defence which reacted in a disciplined manner at first. Hertha keeper Jarstein was the earliest stopper in action as he easily dealt with efforts by Sabitzer (7. and 20.) and Keita (24.). Two minutes later a timely challenge by former Berlin skipper Lustenberger denied Leipzig’s Forsberg as the latter was about to pull the trigger. The Berliners stood firm until the 41st minute when the hosts took the lead as Keita found Werner inside the Berlin box. The striker controlled the ball well before beating Jarstein from close range. Leipzig led 1-1 at the break.
Hertha tried hard after the break but were never really able to properly match the newly-promoted home side, who doubled their lead after around an hour afetr Forsberg had floated a corner into the box and the Hertha defence allowed Orban a free header to make it 2-0 (62.). The home side dropped down a gear after the second goal but Hertha still were unable to get a real foothold in the game. Leipzig had a Sabitzer goal ruled out for offside (79.). Moments later Esswein blazed over following a corner (81.). In the end the capital city side deservedly lost 0-2.
The 0-2 defeat in Leipzig was Hertha’s fourth loss of the season. They are now in 4th place in the table. Hertha’s final home game of 2016 sees struggling SV Darmstadt 98 visit the Olympic stadium in Berlin for a floodlit matchday 16 clash on Wednesday night (21.12.16, 8.00 PM).
