Kalou out of AFCON with the Ivory Coast
Salmon Kalou’s Ivory Coast have been eliminated from this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. On Tuesday evening, the Elephants lost their final, decisive group stage game against Morocco 1-0, a game they had to win to qualify for the quarter finals. “We’re obviously very disappointed,” commented Kalou after the match. In their first two games, the reigning champions drew 0-0 with Togo, and then 2-2 with DR Congo.
Michel Dussuyer’s side went into their last group game with optimism, and in the first half had chances to secure qualification into the next round. Kalou could have put his side into the lead twice, but was denied by Morocco’s ‘keeper the first time (37’), and then agonizingly by the post two minutes before the break. The Hertha forward was named the Man of the Match after the final whistle, and also announced his retirement from international football.
