“Make way for the next generation”

“Make way for the next generation”

Having announced his retirement from the Norwegian national team, Per Skjelbred speaks to herthabsc.de about his decision and his reasons for doing so.

He’s called time after 42 appearances for his country! Per Skjelbred announced his retirement from the Norwegian national team. He first made his debut for Norway in March 2007 in a 2-2 draw against Turkey. The midfielder, who led his team out on to the field as captain recently, explains the reasons behind his decision in a short interview with herthabsc.de.
Per Skjelbred on...
... his decision: I thought about it for a very long time. I got the feeling that it was time for me to make way for the new generation of players more and more during the last few games.
... the reasons: I’ve always absolutely loved playing for my country but now I have taken the decision that I want to completely concentrate on playing for Hertha BSC. On the other hand I also just want to spend more time with my family. I kept finding it harder and harder having to say goodbye to them before travelling particularly long distances for international games.
... his hopes for the national team: Obviously I only wish the boys all the best. It will also give the coach a chance for a new beginning. I will continue to maintain a keen interest in how the team is doing.
