Berlin- Fan favourite, leader and saver of points. Yann Sommer has become a regular last line for Borussia Mönchengladbach this season and has taken over the role vacated by André ter Stegen and become the undisputed number one. His value to the team was proved last weekend when he saved a penalty to preserve a point for his side away in Frankfurt.

Wednesday will see the Swiss national goalkeeper welcome Pal Dardai’s Hertha with his side. He spoke to us ahead of the clash in Gladbach
Hertha BSC: Mr Sommer, Gladbach like 10th after 26 games, four points from Europe and four points from the relegation places. Where does the side go from here?
Yann Sommer: This week is an important one for is, at home to Hertha and then away to Köln. These type of games will show whether or not we’re ready to close the gap on the top of the table.
Hertha BSC: Last time out against Eintracht Frankfurt your penalty save meant you preserved a point for your team. Looking back, what did you make of that game?
Sommer: I’m happy because it was the first time I had managed to save a penalty. It was important for us to take something away from this game, because Frankfurt played very well against us. They did not give us a lot of space and looked to take risks. They closed us down and won all the 50-50s. That makes it hard for a team who likes to play football like us. We did get our passing game going like we are used to doing and we were a bit too lethargic.
Hertha: Recently the games between the two clubs have been full of goals. The reverse fixture in the Olympiastadion finished 3-0 to Hertha, and before that there had been two big wins for Gladbach.
Sommer: We don’t want to dwell too long on the last match. Obviously the reverse fixture wasn’t a good performance from us, but we have played very well against them in the past. We want to come out positive and create a different outcome to last time. I am expecting a very intense game. It’s perhaps a good omen that it’s almost exactly a year since we won 5-0 at home against Hertha. But you are a hard working team who will demand a lot from us.
Hertha: A win tonight could see Gladbach reduce the gap to sixth place. Extra motivation?
Sommer: At the end of the day we just have to keep doing what we are doing and keep winning matches. We will have to be powerful against Hertha to create more chances than we did against Frankfurt. We want to give everything to make sure the three points stay in Gladbach.
