Hertha claim home win over Augsburg
Hertha were dominant and in control from the start on a sunny afternoon and could have taken the lead early, but Vladimir Darida saw his shot blocked after two minutes. The deserved lead came after just 12 minutes, when Brooks turned home Stocker’s cross after an original corner had been cleared. Augsburg sat back and the home side continued to come at them with confidence, doubling the lead with ten minutes left of the first half thanks to Stocker. Pal Dardai’s men had the majority of the play in the second 45 as well and the Hungarian saw his side create some very good openings. The game opened up slightly towards the end and Jarstein had to be alert to keep a clean sheet. Salomon Kalou could have made it three in the final minutes, but keeper Marvin Hitz was able to smother.
The 11th home win of the season means Hertha jump to 43 points and back to fifth in the table, ahead of an Easter Saturday visit to Mainz 05 next weekend.
2’: The first opportunity! Darida receives the ball from the right, but a defender gets in the way of the Czech man’s shot.
12’: GOOOOOOAAAAAAL! It’s John Brooks. Stocker brings down a clearance from a corner, cross the ball back into the box and John is there to head home past Hitz!
20’: Surely 2-0! Kalou plays the one-two and plays in Ibisevic, who finds himself clean though, but Hitz denies the Bosnian from close range twice.
36’: YEEEEEEEEEEEEES! That is the second. Ibisevic holds up play and retains possession in midfield, before passing to Kalou who unselfishly squares to Stocker to tap into an empty net!
57’: Plattenhardt powers another free kick on target, but Hitz palms it away
63’: The best chance for the visitors! Ji crosses from the left and Finnbohason gets to the near post first, but cannot direct his flick on target.
67’: Another chance for the hosts. Ibisevic powers past two players on the edge of the box, but lashes his shot wide from 20 yards
83’: Plattenhardt tries his luck again from distance with the dead ball, but Hitz keeps it out once more.
90’: The best chance of the whole day falls to Kalou from Skjelbred’s pass, but the Ivorian can’t get it under control and Hitz gathers.
