"We're on the right path for Europe"
Berlin- Allan Souza looks a little tired. He has just finished an intense training session and then spent 90 minutes with his interpreter practicing English. “The lessons are going well,” says the Brasilian. The South American has been in the capital with Hertha for nine months now. After a steady start he missed the start of the second half of the season but has fought hard to get himself ever closer to Pal Dardai’s team and injuries have helped his ultimately inevitable rise into the first team happen sooner than planned. He will play against Bremen this weekend as well. The 20-year-old spoke to us ahead of the game about his hobbys, his goals for the season and the 31st Bundesliga matchday.
Hertha BSC: Allan last time we spoke you promised us you would improve your language knoweldge. How is that all going?
Allan: At the moment I am concentrating fully on football and only have time for the the English classes. I think it’s going well at the moment and I have already got solid basis. Hopefully I will continue picking it up quickly. My German still needs some improving though.
Hertha BSC: Professional footballers are always trying to get everything out of themselves for every game. How do you recharge your batteries?
Allan: I like to visit the famous sights and go to restaurants here in Berlin. It’s always a bit different when I am in Brazil. I’ll play foot-volleyball. Other than that I like to be in nature, or go fishing with my Dad. Family is the most important thing for me. We see each other as much as we can.
Hertha BSC: Let’s move to the Bundesliga. The season is in ist final stages, and everything will be decided. Why do you think Hertha will achieve their goals this season.
Allan: We are on the right path to reach Europe. There are just a few games left to confirm that. We can get there if we are concentrated and focused. We can reach the Europa League!
Hertha BSC: Several key players are going to be missing, how will they be compensated for? Allan: Younger players are getting a chance behind those injured and I think we have a very strong squad. We have to give everything and show a lot of will. If we can do that then we will quickly forget how long the injury list is.
Hertha BSC: Last week was the first time the team won in a game you had started. Were you aware of this statistic?
Allan: During the 90 minutes I spent on the pitch I wasn’t thinking about it, it was just important to try and get the three points. It was obviously good that we were able to win. I am not a fixed post in this team. And as a result I give even more, I want to make myself an option for the coach and give everything I can for the fans.
Hertha BSC: You started the year playing in the under-20 South American championship. As a result you missed the first few games of the new year and you needed to get yourself back fighting and ready to go. How do you look at this decision in hindsight?
Allan: I never stopped focusing on Hertha and the league. Brazil is my country and I wanted to represent them. I do not think it was a mistake. If we had won the title it would have meant a lot to me and my country. But that does not mean I am not prepared to give everything for Hertha.
Hertha BSC: You future is still a little uncertain at the moment. How do you feel being here in Berlin at Hertha.
Allan: I would love to stay in Berlin longer. I have a great bond with the team and the city. Hertha and Liverpool have been in contact and everyone wants the best outcome for everyone in involved.
Hertha BSC: Do you follow the Bundesliga and keep an eye on other players and teams?
Allan: I have been following the Bundesliga for a long time. It is one of the best leagues in the world. Xabi Alonso is my all-time favourite player.
Hertha BSC: You’ll be making the trip to Werder Bremen, who are in very good form. How can you overcome that?
Allan: Everyone knows how well they are playing at the moment. One lapse in concentration and you can find yourself a goal behind so we must be incredibly focused. We cannot give them a sniff. The team who makes the fewest mistakes will leave the pitch the winner tomorrow.
