Mittelstädt already on his way to the U20 World Cup

Maximilian Mittelstädt has already embarked on his U20 World Cup adventure despite the season not yet being over. This is due to the fact that the personnel situation at Hertha BSC has improved as several players are set to return from injury or suspension.
It was a phone call that woke him up straight away. On Sunday, just one day after the crucial away victory in Darmstadt, Maximilian Mittelstädt’s phone rang as he was having a short nap. At the other end of the phone was Guido Streichsbier, head coach for the U20 national team. “He told me that I can now travel promptly to South Korea for the tournament,” the 20-year-old revealed on Monday morning shortly before his flight to the competition, which will be held from 20th May to 11th June, with 24 teams competing.
The original plan was for the Hertha home-grown talent to join the national team only after the final Bundesliga match of the season this Saturday (20/05/17) together with Jordan Torunarigha. However since Marvin Plattenhardt and Niklas Stark were fit again to face Darmstadt as well as Sebastian Langkamp and John Anthony Brooks completing their suspensions, the number 34 has stepped aside to prepare for the upcoming tournament. “Pál Dárdai spoke with me and explained the decision. I’m pleased that I will be able to be part of all the team’s preparations for the World Cup,” said Mittelstädt, who Streichsbier plans to give an important role at the tournament. “We’ve been playing in a 3-5-2 system recently with me playing on the left-hand side,” said Mittelstädt.
The Hertha man will face Venezuela (20/05/17), Mexico (23/05/17) and Vanuatu (26/05/17) with Germany in group B. Torunarigha will join him and the rest of the squad after Hertha’s final Bundesliga match of the season. “Our first priority is to get out of the group and then of course to get as far as possible,” said Mittelstädt. Should the team qualify, they could then come up against the likes of France, England and Portugal, who have a number of a number of high-profile players in their squad.
