Plattenhardt in Confederations Cup squad

German National coach Joachim Löw has called up Marvin Plattenhardt for the Confederations Cup squad, while Mitchell Weiser and Niklas Stark will travel to Poland for the European under-21 Championships this summer.
Berlin- A wonderful honour for Marvin Plattenhardt! Germany coach Joachim Löw today confirmed Hertha left back in his squad for this summer’s Confederations Cup - a first international call up for the 25-year-old, who will hope to make as many appearances as possible during the tournament, which runs from 17 June to 2 July.
“I am so happy to be selected. I see it as a reward for my performances here at Hertha in the couple of seasons. I will try to make the most of this opportunity and make as good an impression as I can. I have had to cancel my holiday to Crete, but I’m happy to do that when this is the alternative!” said Plattenhardt, who has come on leaps and bounds under coach Pal Dardai during his time in the capital.
“Marvin had developed so well with us. He has consistently shown his quality in the last two years and his left foot is such a valuable asset. He is a key player for us,” said coach Dardai. Michael Preetz was also delighted with Wednesday’s news. “Marvin is our first German national player since Arne Friedrich, he deserves this so much,” said the Sporting Director. “It will be a wonderful opportunity for him and almost certainly a career highlight to this point. We are all so pleased for him.” Joachim Löw has had his eye on the Hertha star for some time now. “Plattenhardt has played so well for Hertha this season. He is 25 years old but has a very wise head,” said Germany’s National coach.

The competition in Russia will serve as a test event for next year’s World Cup. Germany are in Group B and will play against Australia (19.06), Chile (22.06) and Cameroon (25.06). The other group sees Russia play Portugal, Mexico and New Zealand. The semi-finals will take place on June 28 and 29 with final and third place play-off on Sunday July 2.
Weiser and Stark in Euro under-21 squad
At the same time Mitchell Weiser and Niklas Stark will complete for the European under-21 title with Germany in Poland. Coach Stefan Kuntz named both Hertha players in his squad for the tournament on Wednesday morning. Germany will play against The Czech Republic (18.06), Denmark (21.06) and Italy (24.06). A potential semi-final could lie in wait on June 27, with the final set to be played on June 30.
