Following the arrival of Matthew Leckie last week Hertha have continued their active summer transfer window by today capturing RB Leipzig midfielder Davie Selke for next season for an undisclosed fee. The 22-year-old centre forward has signed a long-term deal and will wear the number 27 for Pal Dardai’s side next season.
Hertha’s new signing said upon signing: “Hertha is a big club in the Bundesliga for me and I’m excited that the move has come off. I want to help the team over the next few years and make sure they keep their place in the upper regions of the table.” Selke started at Werder Bremen where he made his league debut before moving to RB Leipzig in summer 2015. Last season he scored four goals in 21 appearances and recorded one assist in helping his side finish second in the league. Sporting director Michael Preetz added: “We are delighted we have been joined by a young and talented German national player, who has already demonstrated how strong he can be in the final third of the pitch. We see so much potential for development in Davie given that he has already shown his quality for Bremen, Leipzig and the German international youth sides.”
Selke currently plays for the Germany under-21 national side and will join his new club teammates Mitchell Weiser and Niklas Stark at this summer’s under-21 European Championships in Poland. Selke has represented all of Germany’s youth sides since under-16 level. At last summer’s Olympic Games Selke scored two goals in five matches for Die Mannschaft as they lost out on penalties to host Brazil in the final, taking home a silver medal.
