Braced for the fight
Three Hertha players are getting ready to begin training with the German under-21 national team ahead of the upcoming European Championships in Poland.
Berlin/Grassau: Only time for a quick holiday this year if your name is Niklas Stark or Mitchell Weiser, as the youngest prepare to go again ahead of the under-21 Euros in Poland. “I enjoyed the time off, spent time with my family and friends. I was still able to unwind pretty well even though it was just for a short time,” explained Stark.
Big tournament - big aims
It’s not taken long for the next big tournament to come around, with the tournament in Poland getting under way on June 16. Stefan Kuntz’s men have already been training since yesterday (Thursday) with 25 of the squad were present in Grassau for the first session. The team will train together for eight days with their eyes on the ultimate prize. “We are part of the list of favourites and we want to take this tag with us,” said Kuntz. “We want to play for the title and write our own piece of history,” added the coach. Hertha’s Stark agrees. “We are now going there just to achieve a certain position or reach a certain round. We want to lift that trophy. We’ll have to wait and see if that becomes a reality but we are definitely confident and motivated enough to make it happen.
Laying the foundations
Stark believes the training camp in upper Bavaria is the perfect place to build a base for the tournament. “We have some fantastic facilities to train in, the atmosphere in the team is already good and it’s been great to see the boys again. The excitement of a reunion should be ever more special for Stark given the news yesterday of the arrvival of compatriot Davie Selke to Hertha next season. “I think it’s terrific that Davie has joined us. He is a great guy, who always brings a good atmosphere to the place which spreads through the team. He works hard on the pitch, is a fighter and a sharp shooter. As a result I am very excited.”
For now though it’s all about wearing the shirt with the eagle on it. After Grassau theteam will move to another training camp in Frankfurt before the fight for the right to be European Champion starts. The training sessions at SC Hessen will be open to the public.
The flight to Krakow is on June 14, four days before the first Group C game against the Czech Republic. Clashes with Denmark (June 21) and Italy (June 24) will follow before a potential final berth on June 30. Only then will Stefan Kuntz’s side have the chance to truly realise their ambition.
