2016/17 season statistics – individual performances

Berlin – As well as all the transfer speculation and international games, the summer break also allows us to take a look back on Hertha’s 2016/17 season. In this part of our statistical season review, we crunch the numbers to see which players particularly caught the eye over the 34 matchdays.
Individual performances
If you look at Hertha BSC’s squad, a few players automatically stand out through their individual performances. What was particularly impressive about this season, was that Pál Dárdai gave debuts to four Hertha youth team products their debuts: Jordan Torunarigha, Florian Baak, Arne Maier and Julius Kade.
The first of Dárdai’s men that we’ll take a closer look at, is Rune Jarstein. The goalkeeper was the only man to contest all of the Blue-Whites’ 34 Bundesliga matches, racking up 3060 minutes of game time in the process. What’s more, only Manuel Neuer (14) and Oliver Baumann (12) conceded fewer goals than our man between the sticks. Jarstein also claimed the most crosses of any goalie in the league (47), and played the most long passes (522). His defensive colleague Peter Pekarik was a key part of the Blue-Whites’ game this campaign, as he sent in the most crosses into the box (84) and had the most touches of the ball of any Hertha player (1885). In the rest of the Bundesliga, Frankfurt’s Timothy Chandler crossed the ball the most times (119), while Bayern’s Thiago Alcantara had the most touches (2955).
On the left side of defence, Marvin Plattenhardt particularly stood out through the following statistics – he featured for the whole 90 minutes in all of his 27 appearances, while also setting up the most shots on goal for our capital club (54). Ingolstadt’s Pascal Groß holds the record this season for providing the most passes to set up an effort on goal (98). ‘Platte’ also scored three times from a direct free-kick, only Ingolstadt’s Markus Suttner can say he found the back of the net more times this way (4). In the centre of defence, Sebastian Langkap and John Anthony Brooks both averaged just one foul per game, while also boasting Hertha’s highest pass-success rate – only 14% of their passes didn’t find a teammate. Additionally, Langkamp played the most passes of all his teammates (1476). In comparison to the rest of the Bundesliga, Hoffenheim’s Kevin Vogt had the best pass-success (91.8%) and Bayern’s Thiago the most passes (2561).
Darida’s lungs of steel
In the heart of the Hertha midfield, Vladimir Darida – just like last year – covered the most ground. No other Blue-White ran as much as the Czech per match (12.8km). Only Alessandro Schöpf of Schalke ran more on average than our midfield man (12.9km). If we continue moving forwards, Vedad Ibisevic particularly shone in attack. Our captain directly contributed to more goals than any other Hertha player (12 goals and 6 assists), and also took aim at the opposition’s goal the most times (72). The player who was directly involved in the most goals in the Bundesliga this campaign was Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg (8 goals, 22 assists). ‘Vedator’ was also the most fouled Hertha player (62), nothing compared to Ingolstadt’s Dario Lezcano, who suffered 136 over the season.
The Bosnian fired his side into the lead on seven occasions - a stat that no other player in the league can trump. Salomon Kalou was Hertha’s second-best scorer, netting six times and proving seven assists. Kalou performed particularly well at home, with ten of these 13 goals or assists coming at the Olympiastadion. Finally, we come to Hertha’s go-to man from the bench. Julian Schieber, who was sidelined due to injury from the 20th matchday, found the back of the net three times after being subbed on. Freiburg’s Nils Petersen was the Bundesliga's best in this regard this season (9).
