New contract for Gersbeck
New contract for Gersbeck

Hertha BSC have extended goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck’s contract. The academy product will play another year on loan with VfL Osnabrück.
Berlin – Hertha BSC have continued to plan the shape of their squad for next season, and another decision has been made today. Marius Gersbeck has received a contract extension with the Blue-Whites. “Marius is a Berlin boy, a really good fit for us. He identifies himself with our club and has continued to improve over the last few years. We are of the belief that he will continue to develop,” commented general manager Michael Preetz on the young shot-stopper, who has been with the club since 2004 and risen through the ranks of all of Hertha’s youth teams. “Hertha BSC is my club. As a result, I’m very happy to be able to continue working with them,” said an elated Gersbeck, who celebrated an unforgettable Bundesliga debut in net as Berlin defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in December 2013.
However, before Gersbeck can wear the Hertha flag on his shirt, the 21-year-old will have to spend the 2017/18 season playing – as he did last year – playing for third-tier side VfL Osnabrück. “I feel comfortable with VfL and enjoy the confidence that the manager and my teammates have in me. As a young player it’s simply very important for me to gain game experience – and that’s what I’ll do in Osnabrück,” said the goalkeeper, who was selected as the best rated goalkeeper in the league last year according to sport magazine ‘kicker’. The former Germany youth player made 37 appearances for the Lower Saxony outfit and kept 11 clean-sheets. Gersbeck missed the last game of the season, as he had to undergo an operation on his meniscus. Recently, the goalkeeper has been feeling good about his rehab process, and is looking forward to his comeback: “I’ll be fit for the start of the season,” said Gersbeck.
