Hungry for a final
Hungry for a final

Berlin/Sotschi– The Germany under-21s have shown how it’s done, now it’s up to the senior squad to reach a major tournament final. Tuesday saw Stefan Kuntz’s side, with Mitchell Weiser, Niklas Stark and Davie Selke reach the showpiece match of the European under-21 Championship in Poland, and Thursday will Joachim Löw’s team try and emulate that feat in Russia.
Germany, and potentially Marvin Plattenhardt,, will face off against Mexico with the hopes of reaching the final of the 2017 Confed Cup. “We want to make the final, and players are hungry, but we’ll need to up our level from the first half against Cameroon,” said Löw. “Mexico cover a lot of ground and have a lot of quick, and technically very gifted players. They’ll play on the same level as Chile - giving it absolutely everything,” added Löw.
Two undefeated teams
Both teams are unbeaten to the point in the tournament. Both teams finished their group with seven points - Germany topping B while Mexico finished second on goal difference to Portugal. Something has got to give in Sochi on Thursday. The Germans will probably not want to follow in the footsteps of the under-21s and need the drama of penalties to advance. “We are ready for the game. Chicharito is not unknown to us, he is very dangerous,” warned Marc-André ter Stegen about the Leverkusen striker.
Should Germany reach the final they will play once again against Chile, who last night beat Portugal 3-0 on penalties. The aim would then be to better the 1-1 draw from the group stage and triumph over the South American champions. A defeat on Thursday would leave ‘Die Mannschaft’ playing Portugal for third place on Sunday afternoon.
