Liverpool ran out comfortable winners against Hertha BSC on Saturday night, winning 3-0 in the Olympiastadion.
Berlin- Hertha were defeated in their 125th anniversary match against Liverpool after goals from Dominic Solanke, Giorgi Wijnaldum and Mo Salah.
Line-up
There were seven changes from Pal Dardai from the Traditions Cup final last week. Klatte, Haraguchi, Langkamp, Mittelstädt, Maier, Kurt and Selke were replaced by Jarstein, Weiser, Lustenbergerm Plattenhardt, Darida, Duda and Kalou. Karim Rekik and Mathew Leckie made it two new signings in the starting eleven.
Match summary:
Hertha started the game stronger inside a celebratory atmosphere in the Olympiastadion, but Mitchell Weiser and Vladimir Darida were unable to convert early chances. They were punished minutes later when Adam Lallana’s cross was headed in by Dominic Solanke. Sadio Mane should have made it two minutes later, but blasted over from five yards when in space. Ondrej Duda had Hertha’s best chance of the game, but saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line by Joel Matip at the last moment. Just as Hertha looked dangerous again, they were dealt another blow when Giorgi Wijanldum rolled home number two from out the penalty area before the break.
After the restart the home side, pushed on by the crowd, again looked dangerous, but were unable to find the final pass. Liverpool’s extra bit of quality shone through again just after the hour, as Philippe Coutinho’s long ball was picked up and then coolly finished with a chip over Jarstein by Mo Salah. Dardai made eight changes thereafter, and Alex Esswein was denied in the closing stages before Valentin Stocker forced a good save from Simon Mignolet from a free kick. There was to be no celebratory goal for Hertha’s 125th birthday, as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds showed why they’re on the brink of playing the Champions League next season.
Conclusion
Liverpool were worthy winners after taking their chances and seeing the game out on Saturday evening, though a little bit more luck in front of goal. Pal Dardai will now take Hertha away to Schladming for the final pre-season training camp on Monday.
