Time is of the essence for Hertha, who began training on Tuesday afternoon. With a 90-minute long session the boys will be putting the groundwork in before the two sides meet on Friday evening. Pál Dárdai spoke about the positive atmosphere the boys will want to take into the game coming off the back of their away win in Leverkusen, “Myself and the players absolutely want to win the game on Friday. It’s a massive opportunity for us to get a little run of form going.” The coach admitted, however, “If there is anything those Mainz player can do, it’s fight. I’m expecting it to be a tough battle out on the pitch.”

Who will take part in this battle on Friday night is not yet certain. There is still a question mark over whether Davie Selke’s will be fit and he is sitting the first training session of the week out. “Davie has a slight cold. So we have decided to give him the day off, so as to not provoke anything worse,” said Dárdai. Jordan Torunarigha has a good chance of being back after he trained individually with Karim Rekik on Tuesday. “If everything goes well then Jordan will be back in first team training on Wednesday. The chances of him playing on Friday are probably around 90%,” said Dárdai optimistically. Centre-back partner Rekik is recovering more slowly, however, “Karim will probably not train with the first team this week,” explained Dárdai.
It is not clear however, when Ondrej Duda will train again with the first team, “We haven’t decided yet, whether he will train with us this week or whether it makes more sense for him to join up with us at the start of next week,” said Dárdai, going on to say, “We don’t have many sessions this week and we don’t want to risk anything.” Hertha will have sessions on Wednesday and Thursday and then will meet Mainz at 20:30 CET on Friday evening.
