Goalless draw in Mainz
Team news
For both teams, the main news was to do with who would start between the sticks. Rune Jarstein returned to the Hertha side after injury, whereas Robin Zentner came in to replace the injured Florian Müller for the home side. There was one other change for Hertha, with Marvin Plattenhardt coming in for Maximilian Mittelstädt.
Match summary
Mainz were on top at the start of the game but failed to really threaten the Hertha defence. The best chance of the first half came for Valentino Lazarro, when he hit the woodwork with a header. Mainz also had a chance through Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s shot, but Jarstein was equal to his effort.
There was a half-time substitution from Hertha, with Fabian Lustenberger replacing the injured Niklas Stark. It was a tough contest in the second period, with both sides trying to find the opening goal. Davie Selke came on for Hertha and had a great chance almost immediately, but he put his header wide at the back post. This proved to be the best opportunity of the second half and the game finished goalless.
Conclusion and Outlook
Hertha have 14 points on the board after seven games, just like they did in 2016/17. The Blue-Whites’ next game is after the international break, when they take on SC Freiburg at home (21 October, 15:30 CEST).
