We should’ve won today

We should’ve won today

The post match reaction from Ondrej Duda, Marvin Plattenhardt, Salomon Kalou, Derrick Luckhassen and Valentino Lazaro following Hertha BSC’s 1-1 home draw against SC Freiburg on Sunday.

Despite a strong performance, Hertha BSC had to settle for a point in their home clash with SC Freiburg on Sunday, which ended in a 1-1 draw. After the match, goalscorer Ondrej Duda, Marvin Plattenhardt, Salomon Kalou and Valentino Lazaro gave their post-match thoughts regarding how Hertha played and two lost points from the match. Here are their thoughts:

Ondrej Duda: Per Skjelbred played me in really nicely for my goal and I was able to bring the ball under control on my right foot and fire the ball home. However, I am disappointed that we didn’t win today. We created enough chances to score and decide the match. Freiburg did not play badly and at the same time, they had their chances to score. We have to respect that. However, we were at home and had our fans behind us, meaning we had to score a second. We didn’t get the bit of luck we needed today to win.

Derrick Luckassen: Of course we are disappointed that we didn’t win today. It feels a bit like a defeat. We had a couple of chances to score a second goal and to turn the match in our favour. We were not able to capitalise on these chances and then Freiburg equalised. It turned into a very even, difficult match. We also felt a little bit aggrieved with the referee at the end of the match that we should have had a penalty. There was a foul against Davie Selke that wasn’t given and then the penalty was overtuned. However, it was a nice personal feeling to play for the full 90 minutes. I gave everything that I had.

Marvin Plattenhardt: Of course we wanted to win today and secure all three points at home. We were sadly unable to do this. It is very difficult to summarise a match so soon after it has ended. We created numerous chances and we could have done better in our opponents penalty box to carve out a clear chance. However, you have seen that we played well from the first second of the match. We have trained well in recent weeks and studied what we haven’t done well. In my opinion, we were the much better side as Freiburg didn’t have many chances to score. This was tough to take at the end of the match.

Salomon Kalou: Overall we played well and it is good for the whole team that Ondrej Duda was on the scoresheet once again. I hope he continues to score. It is difficult to assess the penalty situation as I need to watch it again. I did think it was a penalty kick at the time.

Valentino Lazaro: It feels like we have lost the match as we missed out on two extra points today. A few things went against us today. What we will be saying to ourselves tonight is the fact that we lacked the final composure to take a chance and see out the match. We were able to break through the Freiburg defence on several occasions and had success down both flanks. We missed that final bit of composure to seal out the match. Some of the decisions went against us today and this was a factor for frustration. Regarding the penalty decision at the end of the match, I was told that it wasn’t a clear penalty decision. I didn’t actually see the foul happen but I know that the video assistant referee should only be used to overturn mistakes. It is disappointing that we missed out on all three points after putting in a really good performance.
