Back to work!

Berlin – On Sunday afternoon (29/12/19), seven days after Hertha’s last match against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0), the players were subjected to some individual fitness tests in preparation for the start of the upcoming Rückrunde. The team was the first out of all 18 Bundesliga sides to get back to work. Despite the short Christmas holiday, everyone was looking forward to the first proper training session on Monday morning. “Finally some football,” said captain Vedad Ibisevic as he made his way onto the pitch. This kind of positive attitude has been noticeable at the club after the team’s four-game unbeaten run before Christmas and spirits were high throughout the 100-minute training session.
“We want to score more goals!”
The 23 players all arrived full of energy, with just Rune Jarstein, Thomas Kraft and Daishawn Redan missing due to illness. Luis Klatte and Dennis Smarsch worked separately with new goalkeeping coach Max Steinborn, while the outfield players warmed up and did some passing exercises before starting their main drill. Jürgen Klinsmann got his boys in blue to practice their build-up play and finishing, encouraging them to try and find the goal as quickly as possible. As such, those who came out to watch the session were treated to some spectacular strikes and showed their appreciation with thunderous rounds of applause. The players fought it out in three teams of seven as Klinsmann and his assistants Alexander Nouri and Markus Feldhoff shouted instructions from the sidelines. The ‘resting’ team worked with fitness coaches Henrik Kuchno and Werner Leuthard on the next-door pitch while waiting for their turn.
The focus on attack will continue in the coming sessions. “We want to try and get further forward, as I’ve said many times. We’re working on it bit by bit. We want to put our opponents under more pressure, create more chances and score more goals,” explains Klinsmann. There will be another session on Monday behind closed doors followed by a morning and afternoon session on Tuesday (31/12/19). After a final session on New Year’s Day, the team will set off for the week-long training camp in Florida on Thursday (02/01/2020).
