Hertha BSC sign Alexander Schwolow

Hertha Berlin have signed Alexander Schwolow. The shot-stopper joins the Old Lady from SC Freiburg and has signed a long-term deal. “We want to bring in a keeper who will provide competition for places, and who is also strong enough to be our number 1. We are looking for somebody who fits our team well and who is also a good footballer, as this is important for how we want to play,” said head coach Bruno Labbadia at the opening training session, describing the goalkeeping job role which the man from Wiesbaden has now been signed to fill. “In Alexander Schwolow we have been able to sign a goalkeeper who is exactly what we were looking for. He is 28 years old and has experience, and he has shown his level of quality in previous Bundesliga seasons. He will also fit in well as a person,” said Michael Preetz, Managing Director of Sport and Communications, after Tuesday’s transfer announcement (04.08.20.)
“The talks with Bruno Labbadia and Michael Preetz were completely clear and fair from the beginning. I could really identify with their ideas and with the role that I will play here. Hertha has great tradition and I would like to be a part of the foundations upon which this club can build a positive future,” declared Alexander Schwolow, who is pleased with the successful completion of the transfer. He continued: “I am somebody who is highly-motivated and so I come to Hertha with great enthusiasm for this new challenge. I will do everything I can to ensure that we win as many games as possible in the new season, and to make these fantastic supporters as happy as possible!”
The 28 year-old has stood between the posts in Freiburg since 2009, only leaving in the 2014/15 season to play on loan for Arminia Bielefeld, with whom he reached the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal. So far in his career, the 6ft 3 goalkeeper has played 125 Bundesliga matches, whilst also keeping goal for Freiburg in two UEFA Europa League qualifiers. Schwolow also passed through the U18, U19 and U20 Germany national teams, playing a total of twelve youth internationals.
