Living life to the fullest

Living life to the fullest

Many Hertha fans are hoping for great things from Matheus Cunha next season. The Brazilian is optimistic as he approaches the challenges that lie ahead.

Since the turn of the year, Matheus Cunha has shown how valuable he is to Hertha BSC, hitting the ground running upon arrival. No doubt about it. The Brazilian forward often brought Hertha’s attack to life, either up front or on the wing. In eleven games, the versatile striker scored five goals and provided two assists on Hertha’s successful quest to avoid relegation. Describing the 21-year-old’s first six months at the club in word is, however, almost impossible – the January signing’s start to life in Berlin has been far too eventful for that. "The first two months were very difficult for me. I arrived here in frantic times," said the former Leipzig man in an interview with herthabsc.de, but emphasised how happy he is in Berlin now. "I feel great. I’m getting to know Berlin and the club better as time goes on – I’m happy to be here."

Emotional moments, on and off the pitch

Nevertheless, it’s worth taking a look beyond the numbers and statistics. After all, this shows exactly what Cunha means when he says "frantic times". This is no exaggeration from the attacker, looking back at the unsettling moments along with all the exciting times – the ups and the downs. He refers to a phase at the club which saw several managerial changes, a derby win, an intense encounter with his former club, which saw him set up a goal and suffer concussion in the same game – let alone the whole corona situation. Head coach Bruno Labbadia’s character and experience helped the club overcome these hurdles and gather their strengths again. Cunha describes it as follows: "We improved one step at a time and started to have more stability in our game. I was far more focused on things happening on the pitch."

As a result, there has been a lot to report about Matheus Cunha’s career so far at Hertha. In addition to all that though, there have been a lot of changes in Cunha's private life since he moved from Leipzig to the Spree. In May, partner Gabriela gave birth to their first child - son Levi. "I’m very happy, the birth was an indescribably beautiful moment. Even though I didn't get much sleep in the first few months, it's just a beautiful feeling that makes me happy every day," says the cheerful attacker of his joy of becoming at father. This is noticeable on the pitch: "My son gives me more motivation. I love the game of football but knowing that my son is at home watching me motivates me all the more".

Optimistic for the new season

For someone who lives life to the fullest like Cunha, things are good at the moment. Even the latest friendlies that didn’t necessarily go to plan can’t change that fact. “We’d obviously imagined it going a different way, but some obstacles are normal in pre-season. We know that we need to bring more, but I’m positive that we can put on a better showing in the next few games and get back to our best,” says the attacker, who made the move from his home country to Sion in Switzerland in 2017. Not surprisingly, the Brazilian is entering the new season with optimism. "We train every day to get to the top. That is our big goal." A goal that Cunha and his team are determined to achieve at all costs, above all in more stable circumstances. There is not the slightest doubt about that.
