Arne Maier: Contract extension and loan to Bielefeld

Hertha’s academy product joins the newly-promoted side to gain playing time during the upcoming season.

As the end of the 2020 summer transfer window approaches, Hertha have temporarily waved goodbye to midfielder Arne Maier. The player will spend the season on loan to Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld to gain playing time and valuable experience. Prior to his departure, Maier has extended his contract with Hertha. “Arne came to us with the desire to go somewhere where he can get regular minutes in the Bundesliga. We hope that he can continue his development in a new environment and we look forward to welcoming him back to Berlin next summer,” said managing director Michael Preetz on Monday (05/10/20). “I am really happy to be able to extend my contract here, and I hope to get plenty of playing time in Bielefeld. Arminia is an exciting challenge that I will be able to learn a lot from,” said Maier himself.
Arne Maier joined Hertha from youth club Ludwigsfelder FC in 2007, and signed his first professional contract with the club in January 2017. Since then, he has appeared in 58 Bundesliga matches for the Old Lady, including two this season. Maier has also played three matches in the UEFA Europa League and DFB-Pokal. In summer 2018, our number 23 won the U19 Bundesliga and it was not just those at Hertha who were impressed by Maier, who has also represented Germany at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level. He also won silver and bronze Fritz Walter medals during his time in the youth set-up.
