The Paraguayan centre back joins Hertha Berlin from FC Basel, signing a long-term deal with the club.

Hertha Berlin have strengthened their defensive options with the deadline-day signing of Omar Alderete from FC Basel. The centre back has signed a long-term contract with the capital club. “Omar has proven himself in Basel and also gained a lot of experience in different competitions in South America. He is an intelligent player who can build out from the back and he will boost our defence with his robust physique and strength in tackle,” said Michael Preetz about Hertha’s new number 14. “I’m really looking forward this opportunity to play in the Bundesliga and in Berlin. I want to improve even further and take my chance,” said the left-footed centre back.

A Paraguay international, Alderete turned professional at his hometown club Cerro Porteño, gaining experience in the domestic Primera División and on the international stage in the Copa Sudamericana. During a loan move to Argentinean top-flight club Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Alderete became a first-team regular and eventually earned a move to league rivals Club Atlético Huracán, where he got his first taste of Copa Libertadores football. The 6’2’’ defender then caught the eye of FC Basel in summer 2019 and has been a rock at the back for the Swiss outfit, featuring in 30 league and 17 European games for FCB.
