Bruno Labbadia made one change from the draw in Cologne; Matheus Cunha celebrated his comeback to the starting line-up with Dodi Lukébakio dropping to the bench. The Old Lady began with two up top again, as the head coach opted to stick with the pairing of Jhon Córdoba and Krzysztof Piątek. At the back, Peter Pekarík made his 150th league appearance for Hertha. Sebastian Hoeneß also made one change to his team, bringing Christoph Baumgartner back into the Hoffenheim team in place of Ihlas Bebou.
At a rainy Olympiastadion, Labbadia’s men started well and had the chance to go ahead when they got an early penalty. Kasim Adams brought down Córdoba while trying to clear the ball, but Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann guessed the right way to deny Piątek from the spot (12’). The boys from Berlin kept their heads up and produced another good chance on 17 minutes. Cunha’s cross from the left evaded Córdoba and found Pekarík at the back post, but the right-back couldn’t hit the target. Hertha continued to pass the eye test, creating another great opportunity not long after. Córdoba was involved again, but he couldn’t keep his header down when connecting with a cross from Maximilian Mittelstädt (31’). There was a nasty surprise in store at the other end of the pitch, as Sebastian Rudy broke free in an inside-right position and fired the ball into the back of the net. Alexander Schwolow was left helpless, not least due to the ball taking an unfortunate deflection off the leg of Mattéo Guendouzi (33’). It was the visitors’ first dangerous attack. The home side went in search of a reply, but Hoffenheim were visibly lifted by the opening goal and managed to see the lead into the break.

Kramaric dims Hertha’s bright start

Labbadia reacted with a half-time change, bringing on Deyovaisio Zeefuik in place of Pekarík. Hertha got off to a lively start; Córdoba had the first chance but couldn’t head home from another Mittelstädt cross (46’). Hertha pushed for an equaliser and turned to the bench again with an hour on the clock. Lukébakio and Luca Netz replaced Vladimír Darida and Mittelstädt, but it was the side from Sinsheim who scored the next goal. Kramaric controlled a shot from Diadié Sammassékou with his back to goal before spinning and placing it past Schwolow (68’). Daishawn Redan took the place of Piątek up front. The capital city club refused to give up, but couldn’t really fashion any more chances of note. Bebou almost stretched the lead to 3-0 with a later counter (87’) in an attack that eventually spawned a free-kick for the visitors. Kramaric curled the set-piece home to put an end to the match once and for all (88’).
