In memory of Alex Alves

This Sunday, Hertha BSC remembers Alex Alves. Our former striker passed away in November 2012 after contracting a rare bone marrow disease, aged just 37. In 2008, doctors diagnosed Alves, the first Brazilian to play for Hertha in our history, with cancer.

The sublime and the ridiculous – never to be forgotten!

Alves was a key part of the Blue-White attack for three and a half years, between 2000 and 2003. In his 108 games for Hertha, he scored 35 goals and provided assists for a further 19. He was a sight to behold on the pitch, and often unstoppable. One of his most memorable moments came in the game against 1. FC Köln back in the 2000/01 season. 2-0 down at half time, Alves took a shot from the centre circle, directly after the referee blew his whistle to get the game back underway. Unbelievably, he scored, and that became the turning point in what would become a 4-2 comeback win at home! That goal, the “Goal of the Year 2000”, and the win gave our fans an unforgettable memory which is still spoken about more than 20 years later.

Hertha BSC remembers a special footballer and an even more special person. Alex Alves will never be forgotten by anyone in blue and white!
