“A massive disappointment”

Hertha BSC are out of the DFB-Pokal. Our players and staff all appeared frustrated and dejected after the 3-2 round of 16 defeat to 1. FC Union. Sporting director Arne Friedrich was one of those interviewed after the game: “It’s obviously a massive shame, a massive disappointment. It’s such a shame that we’ve lost to Union at home. We really wanted to win, so we need to take a look at ourselves and ask why we didn’t do well enough,” said Friedrich. herthabsc.com have all the reaction to the game here.

Arne Friedrich: It’s obviously a massive shame, a massive disappointment. It’s such a shame that we’ve lost to Union at home. We really wanted to win, so we need to take a look at ourselves and ask why we didn’t do well enough – not just the team, every single one of us. I can understand the frustration of the fans, for sure. The fact is, we’re out of the cup and we are where we are in the table. We can’t be happy with where we are.

Maximilian Mittelstädt: We started the game anything but well – Union put us under pressure from the word go and took the lead. We failed to do what we set out to do in the first 20 minutes, but as the first half went on, we found our way forward a bit more. We were more active in the second half, but conceded the third goal straight after scoring – that was just infuriating. We’re all really disappointed to lose the game. It’s difficult for me to find the words right now.

We’re all disappointed of course; we can’t be happy with that. After the game we went over to the fans and we’re thankful for every single one who supported us.

Dedryck Boyata: It was a disappointing game and an even more disappointing result – that much is clear. We did well with the ball at our feet time and again, but obviously that changes nothing. At half time, we said the next 15 minutes would be extremely important, and then I was asleep for their second goal – that hurt. Even after we got one back, we made a stupid mistake yet again, just like the start of the season. We just all need to do better, myself included.

Linus Gechter: We’re all disappointed of course; we can’t be happy with that. After the game we went over to the fans and we’re thankful for every single one who supported us. We need to take this one on the chin and shift all our focus onto the Bundesliga.
