Ivan Šunjić joins Hertha

Hertha have completed another new signing as Ivan Šunjić has arrived in the capital to sign for the Old Lady. The Croatian midfielder has joined on loan, with the club securing an option to buy him too. “I’ve watched Ivan Šunjić for a number of years. I’m delighted that we’ve now been able to bring him to Hertha BSC,” said Fredi Bobic. “He’s an aggressive ball-winning defensive midfielder and his mentality and qualities will fit perfectly with the football we want to play.” Our new man is excited for his new challenge in Germany: “I’m really happy to get the chance to impress in a new league and I can’t wait to get started. I’m looking forward to getting to know my new teammates and I want to settle in as quickly as possible,” stressed our new number 34.

Three years in England, three trophies in Croatia

The 25-year-old has spent the last three years with Birmingham City in the Championship. Šunjić, who made his debut for Croatia in 2017, played 123 league games for Blues, scoring six goals. He also featured six times in the FA Cup. Šunjić played for Lokomotiva Zagreb and Dinamo Zagreb back in his home country before the move to England. He won the title twice with Dinamo (2014 as a youngster and 2019 after playing 24 times), as well as the domestic cup in 2016. Šunjić also appeared eight times in the UEFA Europa League (plus six times in qualifiers) and six times in UEFA Champions League qualifiers for Croatia’s record champions.
