Pál Dárdai's contract to not be renewed

Pál Dárdai's contract as head coach of Hertha BSC will not be renewed upon expiry at the end of the 2023/24 season. He will instead remain at the club in a different role, having also been awarded a lifetime membership.

"Pál took charge of the team during an extremely tough time for Hertha BSC, which we are incredibly grateful for. Following our relegation, it was uncertain whether we would even be awarded a licence for the 2. Bundesliga. Regardless of that, Pál still agreed to take up the position as head coach," said sporting director Benjamin Weber. "We have now made the decision to bring in a new head coach for the upcoming season. We are pleased, however, that we reached an agreement with Pál last year already under which he would continue to support the club in a different role, should his tenure as head coach come to an end."

"Hertha BSC are my family," said Dárdai. "I have been here for 30 years and know every single blade of grass on the club grounds. We managed to build something this season, which I'm proud of. One thing will never change: I'm a Herthaner, I'll always be a Herthaner and I wish this club nothing but the best!"

Thomas E. Herrich said: "There's no need to explain to anyone the amount of time and energy Pál has given to this club. He has always stuck by this club – his club – even in tough times. He is a club legend and we owe him our deepest gratitude for his efforts at Hertha BSC! We're extremely happy that he will remain involved with our club in a different role. We will meet to discuss what this role will look like when he's back from vacation."

"Pál Dárdai has played a key part in ensuring that the relationship between the team, fans and members has become positive again," said acting president Fabian Drescher. "The importance of this cannot be underlined enough. Now, it's up to us to continue on the path we're on as a club, even with a different coaching set-up."
