"It's time for me to go"

After nine years, 76 games and 8 goals, Vladimír Darida is stepping down from the Cezch Republic national team. Hertha’s number 6 announced his decision on Saturday after the 2-1 European Championship quarter final loss to Denmark. On his Instagram profile, the midfielder was thankful for his time with the team and explained the reasons behind his departure. Here’s Vladi’s statement in full.

“We've bid farewell to the EURO as a national team. After the tournament, I bid farewell to my teammates. I had the honour of being captain as I wore the national jersey for the last time. It wasn't easy for me, but after a lot of consideration, I have decided to end my career with the national team.
I had a wonderful time with the 'Reprezentace'. Whether as an unexpected inclusion in my first European Championship nine years ago or now wearing the captain's armband during my third EUROs. I have always appreciated the fact that I could defend the Czech colours.

Until now, I have sacrificed everything for football and football has given me a lot in return. But everything has its price. This season, in the Bundesliga and with the national team, I spent 140 days away from home at games and training camps. But now I want to spend much more time with my family and my little son.

To all my national team teammates, coaches and function team, I thank you very much: you were great! I enjoyed every meeting, game and training. I also want to thank all the fans who cheered us on and were a great support!

Although I know I will miss the team and the dressing room, it's time for me to go. I wish the guys all the best. Go reach the World Cup! I look forward to every match that I see and will be cheering you on!”
