“Their goals were too soft”

After getting through a tricky first half and celebrating the opening goal with together with the returning fans, things were looking good for the Blue-Whites in their first match of the season at the Berlin Olympiastadion. No wonder then that Marco Richter wasn’t the only one left frustrated that the Old Lady ended up empty-handed against VfL Wolfsburg: “Our aim was to press on and make it 2-0 so that we could secure the three points, but instead we allowed ourselves to sit deeper and deeper. We defended well in parts, but we made silly mistakes and their goals were too soft. It’s a painful one,” said the new Hertha signing. herthabsc.com has all the post-match reaction.

Marco Richter: It was a little bit like the Köln game. We had a good, battling first-half performance, we take the lead in the second half and then we end up throwing it away. Our aim was to press on and make it 2-0 so that we could secure the three points, but instead we allowed ourselves to sit deeper and deeper. Wolfsburg made some attacking changes and brought on some real individual quality. We defended well in parts, but we made silly mistakes and their goals were too soft. It’s a painful one. I had hoped for a very different home debut, but that’s football sometimes. We need to dust ourselves down quickly and give it our all in Munich next weekend. Bayern aren’t easy opponents, but we want to go there and make like difficult for them. We’re certainly not just going there for tea and cake!

Niklas Stark: It’s a painful defeat and shouldn’t have happened. We didn’t give them much, but Wolfsburg took full advantage of the chances they had. Our football improved in the second half and were able to move the ball around better. The boys certainly got stuck in and that’s the most important thing. We have to try and get a foothold in the season as soon as possible and show our best for the full 90 minutes. I have complete faith in the team. Now we will do everything to get a result in Munich.
