Heavy defeat to record champions

Head coach Pál Dárdai made four changes from the team which started the game against VfL Wolfsburg. Deyovaisio Zeefuik replaced Peter Pekarik, Lucas Tousart came in for the injured Prince Boateng, and Stevan Jovetić played in place of Javairô Dilrosun. Marvin Plattenhardt was injured in the warm-up, so Maximilian Mittelstädt started in his place. New signing Ishak Belfodil started on the substitutes’ bench, but fellow newcomers Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Oliver Christensen were not ready to play.

Müller scores early – Jovetić goes off injured

Hertha had the first chance of the game in the second minute. Davie Selke got hold of a misplaced Leon Goretzka backpass, but his shot from distance was saved by Manuel Neuer. Three minutes later, Selke put the ball over after being found by Tousart. Directly after, Bayern went up the other end and took the lead through Thomas Müller (6’). Hertha were compact in their 4-2-3-1 setup, threw themselves into challenges and let little through. However, Dárdai was forced into a change in the 20th minute, with Jovetić coming off injured to be replaced by Dilrosun. In the following minute, Tousart tested Neuer with a shot. As the half went on, the Bavarians took more and more control of the game, with Goretzka coming close with a header (26’). Robert Lewandowski then headed onto the crossbar, before reacting quickest and heading the rebound home. There was a question of offside in the build-up, but VAR confirmed the goal in the 35th minute. Shortly afterwards, captain Dedryck Boyata made a brilliant challenge to deny a certain goal (40’). The half-time whistle came with Bayern 2-0 to the good.

Musiala puts Hertha further behind – Belfodil’s goal is disallowed

There were no substitutions at half time from either team, and the second half got underway with our hosts having the much better start, Jamal Musiala putting the reigning champions 3-0 ahead with a powerful finish (49’). Hertha were inundated with defensive work, with Bayern having the lion’s share of the ball. On the hour mark, Selke tangled with Tanguy Nianzou off the ball, he too coming off injured. This allowed Ishak Belfodil to make his Hertha debut. Dárdai’s team were constantly prevented from creating any attacking opportunities through a formidable Bayern defence. The Bavarians made their quality clear in the final third too, with Lewandowski tapping home substitute Leroy Sané’s cut-back to make it four (70’). Four minutes later, Schwolow made a wonderful save from Goretzka’s header before Tousart shot weakly wide from distance for Hertha (77’). As the game drew to a close, Lewandowski got his hat-trick and made it 5-0 with an 84th-minute header. Belfodil put the ball in the net a minute later but it was ruled out for offside. The Blue-Whites now go into the international break without a point in the league.
